“They made each other better”
In a packed gym from throughout the Prince George’s County community, loved ones remembered 24-year-old Khairi Jackson, 23-year-old Isaiah “Zay” Hazell and 24-year-old Anthony “AJ” Litton, Jr. They were driving on Route 4/Pennsylvania Avenue on the Presidential Parkway on July 6 when they were struck by another vehicle, sending them off the road and killing all three occupants.
Jackson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in Round 4 of the 2024 NFL Draft. He attended Wise High School before playing for the Oregon Ducks in college.
According to ESPN, Hazell played at Maryland and Charlotte, while Leighton played at Florida State and Penn State.
“Together, they admired each other, supported each other, pushed each other. Whether they were together or apart, they made each other better,” said Wise head coach Steve Rapp, who mentored the three, who were widely known as best friends, when He won the Maryland state championship in 2016.
Pictures of three young men in college football jerseys. And framed home jerseys from his high school days at Wise lined the walls behind community leaders and coaches who spoke about his positive impact and legacy.
UMD head football coach Mike Locksley, who mentored Hazel at College Park, talked about the importance of “paying it forward” to keep his memory alive.
“Those three young men exemplified what Wise High School is all about,” he told the crowd.
County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy also spoke directly to bereaved families and urged them to be patient. The investigation into the crash, where state police say alcohol may have been a factor – and no charges have yet been filed against the other drivers involved – is still ongoing.
Braveboy said, “As the state’s attorney, my job is to seek justice and trust me, with your patience and your trust in us, we will continue to seek the truth.”
Several people present at the gymnasium where the vigil was held said the three young men would never be forgotten and were legends in their community.
