At least 11 illegal immigrants are among 27 people arrested for taking part in a melee during the COPA America final in Miami, The Post can reveal.
Luis Beltrán Martínez and Elkin Mayorga, both Colombian citizens, are among the migrants arrested after fans stormed the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday during the tournament final between Colombia and Argentina.
Both of them were charged with assault and trespassing on a law enforcement officer. Mayorga is also charged with distribution of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer with violence.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed lesser charges in his cases and those of at least nine others, according to arrest records.
ICE places a hold on the cases they are requesting to take immigrants into their custody if officials intend to release them.
Internal Homeland Security documents obtained by The Post show that Mayorga — a Colombian citizen — crossed the southern border illegally in Yuma, Arizona, on March 24, 2022, and was arrested by border agents.
Three days later, he was released with a tracking device as part of ICE’s Alternatives to Detention (ATD) program.
However, less than a month later they removed the tracker for unknown reasons.
During the Sunday rush at the Copa, Mayorga is accused of jumping a turnstile. He resisted when police tried to remove him, before trying to run away, according to local news station NBC6.
Argemiro Rodriguez, a Colombian citizen who was also arrested in the Copa disaster, crossed the border into Arizona illegally in October 2021 and was released from ICE custody the following month because he was overweight, according to internal Homeland Security documents.
Documents show that another Colombian migrant who was arrested in Copa was Dillon Parra Castro, who crossed the southern border illegally in McAllen Texas in July 2021 and was released by ICE two months later Was.
Colombian Brandon Poeda was also reportedly part of the mob. According to internal documents, he illegally crossed the border into California in July 2022 and was released the next day with a tracking device.
Among those arrested were Colombian football president Ramon Jesurun and his son Ramon Jamil Jesurun, who were reportedly involved in a physical altercation with security guards.
Fans tried to force their way into the stadium gates, causing the game to be delayed for more than 75 minutes.
During the rush, people became increasingly desperate, taking unorthodox measures to enter the game – including crawling through air vents and jumping over safety railings.
“Last night our law enforcement teams responded quickly to handle an extremely challenging, dangerous situation that created life safety concerns for attendees,” Chief Public Safety Officer James Reyes said in a statement.
“I am grateful to every member of MDPD Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation, as well as our partner agencies for working together to keep fans and our community safe and prevent any major incidents. ”
There were 800 officers working on the ground to control the situation, yet the stadium was destroyed.
