The initial warning was issued at 04:30 local time (03:30 BST), with a helicopter arriving about half an hour later. It found that many of the population were “drifting in the water, while others were still clinging to broken rubber mats”.
The coast guard said fourteen people were rescued via a fishing vessel and 49 others via French military dispatch.
“All of the casualties on board were then brought ashore in Boulogne and cared for by emergency services on land.”
The United Kingdom Coast Guard said that two boats, one from the UK Maritime Rescue Fund RNLI and one from Border Drive, were sent from Dover earlier for backup, but were not required to wait at the scene.
Jacques Billant, prefect of the Pas-de-Calais pocket, instructed journalists that 9 populations were in critical condition.
