Hamas did not welcome the claim that Deif used to be in this section, saying, “These false claims merely serve to conceal the scale of the horrific massacre.” The attack took over a section of the playground that Israeli forces had declared safe for a crowd of hundreds of Palestinians.

Observers said the attack took place in the Israeli-designated safe zone of Muwasi, which stretches from northern Rafah to Khan Yunis. Palestinians have fled to the coastal strip and are sheltering in tents with few common products and services or supplies. More than 80% of Gaza’s community of 2.3 million were driven from their properties.
The resulting images showed abundant craters, burnt tents and burnt vehicles. Patients were transported under the hoods and hatchbacks of trains, on donkey carts and carpets.

Neighboring Egypt, a mediator in ceasefire talks, condemned the attack. “These ongoing violations against Palestinian civilians add serious complications to the ability of ongoing efforts to reach peace and a ceasefire,” its international ministry said in a comment. It also criticized “the shameful silence and lack of action of the international community”.
Egyptian, Qatari and US mediators were pushing for a three-phase ceasefire in Gaza and a proposed plan to release hostages to create less of a gap between Israel and Hamas.
The US-backed proposal calls for an initial ceasefire along with a ban on hostage-taking and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza’s populated subjects. At the same time, the two sides will negotiate the terms of a second phase, which aims to achieve a permanent ceasefire and the full release of hostages in exchange for Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza.
Netanyahu said he was not going ahead with the US-backed proposal, but listed conditions: Israel’s right to continue the war until its goals are met, return of as many hostages as possible in the first phase, refusal of withdrawal. Hamas controls the warring parties in northern Gaza and the prevention of smuggling of arms, as well as the important Philadelphia corridor between Gaza and Egypt.
