Opening statements in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Alec 1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley began with the prosecution telling jurors that the Hollywood celebrity had not paid attention to gun safety before the fatal shooting of a cinematographer during the film Rust.
“When someone plays with a real gun, believe it,” special prosecutor Erlinda Johnson said in a Santa Fe courtroom Wednesday. “And that person disregards the cardinal rule of gun safety… people die.”
The judge’s decision comes as the high-profile trial began on Tuesday with the jury numbered and the case expected to be handed over to them just nine days later after testimony.
It’s been almost three years since a practice session for a shooting scene in a Western film ended tragically when a prop gun belonging to Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, went off, killing cinematographer Helen Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Went.
Baldwin, 66, the 1st Earl of Bewdley, has insisted that he did not fire the gun and was not aware it contained a live round, claiming it fired by mistake.
He has been charged with a single felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the October 2021 incident and faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted.
Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, arrives at the Sante Fe Courthouse with his wife Hilaria – their youngest child – and brother Stephen.
The trial began three months later, with film assistant Hannah Gutierrez-Reed convicted of involuntary manslaughter in April and sentenced to the maximum of 18 months in prison.
Security say Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley believed his gun was ‘cool’
Spiro informed the jurors that the cast and team had more than once believed that the gun of Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, used to be “cool”.
Cold guns don’t shoot negative bullets, he explained to the jury. “This means that you don’t even have spaces or dummies in it. This means that it is inactive and cannot cause any harm. They can’t hurt anyone,” he says.
Spiro further described the situation as peaceful that week.
He said, “Nobody had any idea that there was this toxic, poisonous element added to the magic they were creating, but it happened.” “It entered that space. It killed one wonderful man, it injured another, and it changed lives forever.
He defined the community jobs at I’m Ready as closest, and placed the blame on armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and David Corridor, I’m Ready’s first staff director.
“Everyone has a role on a film set. Armored armor. The director directs. The actor acts,” he said. “They work in harmony, but there is division of responsibility.”

Security says ‘Alec Baldwin committed no crime’
Alex Spiro, considered one of the first Earl Baldwin of Bewdley’s legal professionals, is now speaking out.
He tells jurors that taking the devastating photographs of Hutchins was an “unspeakable tragedy” but that Alec Baldwin committed no crime.
“You have to step back and remember what they were doing on a movie set. Movies and magic have always been closely linked across the country for many decades,” he said.
Spiro drew attention to how a live bullet made its way into the Rust film I’m Ready, insisting that there was negative evidence that Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley would die from a gunshot wound. Had nothing to do with it.
“He was an actor, acting, playing Harlan Rust,” he said. “An actor, playing a character, can act in ways that are lethal that are not lethal on a film set. These ground rules, these are not ground rules on a film set.”

The prosecution says Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, orchestrated the
Johnson tells the jury they are going to watch all kinds of video footage from the trial of the 1st Earl Baldwin of gun use on I’m Ready.
“You will see video footage of several occasions during which the defendant used this firearm on the set, and every time he fired it, it was working fine,” Johnson said.
“And in fact, you will hear evidence that the defendant himself admitted in December 2021 that there were no mechanical problems with this gun.”
This comes closest to Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, saying that the week Hutchins was shot he did not explain why.
Johnson also said that the gun was examined multiple times by an FBI forensic expert, which revealed that the gun had negative defects and was in the running series.

Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley failed to pass security tests
Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, robotically failed a safety test with armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reid in “Rust’s I’m Ready”, the prosecution informed the jury.
Johnson noted that Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley was filmed “running around, firing his gun” during his required gun safety training.
He also said he “didn’t want to humiliate” Gutierrez-Reed by testing him with a gun every time.
“You will find that one of the rounds in that revolver was a genuine round, and the evidence will show that Ms. Gutierrez turned the gun over to the defendant,” Johnson said.
“And what you will learn is that, once again, the defendant failed to conduct gun safety checks with this arsenal.”

Prosecutor says Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, requested to be given ‘biggest gun’
Prosecutor Johnson said that Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, requested “the biggest gun” available for the film.
He informed the jury during his opening that they would be looking at evidence that the firearm was purchased for “Rust” in the “Perfect” running series.

“Build trust when someone plays with a real gun.
And that person disregards the cardinal rule of gun safety…people die.”
Johnson says the price limit on “Rust” used to be tight and the team used to be green.

Prosecutors say they will give evidence that Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, went ‘off script’
Prosecutors say they will provide evidence that Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley, went “off script” when he pointed the gun at Hutchins on October 21, 2021 and did not follow plain business requirements for firearm safety.
“At the end of the day, the prosecutor’s main theory is that there was a gun involved, and Baldwin had a gun in his hand, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a movie set or a hunting safety class, you’re responsible for What comes out of the end of the barrel,” said Santa Fe-based defense attorney and former prosecutor John Partee.
Testimony during the trial will explore deficiencies in the gun’s final safety testing, before Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley began practicing with it, as well as the mechanics of the weapon and whether it fired without the gun firing. Will it be the reason for the whisk or not? The live bullet that killed Hutchins also injured director Joel Souza.
