The Republic of India’s most-awaited wedding ceremony came to an end on Sunday after a star-studded three-day ceremony that even saw the country’s Prime Minister arrive to bless the young couple.

Billionaire heir Anant Ambani married his longtime girlfriend Radhika Merchant in Mumbai in a lavish ceremony attended by Kim and Khloe Kardashian, two former British prime ministers, Indian luminaries and some of Bollywood’s most famous faces. The wedding was followed by a blessing ceremony on Saturday, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the young couple and their families.

The weekend’s festivities concluded on Sunday with a grand reception, or “Mangal Utsav” (holiday pageant), as attendees moved out of Mumbai.

Abadi, owner of Reliance Industries, India’s largest private company, was exempted from fuel duty. Founded by Anant’s grandfather, the conglomerate is now run by his father Mukesh, who is worth more than $122 billion, according to Forbes.

The 16,000-capacity Jio International Conference Centre, owned by Ambani, which hosted wedding ceremonies over the weekend, was transformed into a miniature model of the holy Indian city of Varanasi, complete with flower installations and lavish equipment decorated with gold and silver. Were included. ,

The couple had multiple outfit changes during the three-day party, which featured an array of intricate, personalized items celebrating rustic heritage and tradition.

The service provider’s bridal ensemble was designed by Indian label Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla and included ivory zardozi (an elaborate form of steel embroidery) on silk and a 5-metre (16.4-foot) veil. She completed the look with the jewelery that aunt and sister wore at their respective weddings. She then changed into a luxurious red and gold dress for her “farewell”, the rite of passage during which Indian brides symbolically bid farewell to their relatives before joining their groom’s entourage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the young couple and their families during a blessing ceremony on Saturday.

During this, Ambani arrived on the red carpet wearing a yellow sherwani with shoes. For the wedding ceremony, she wore a traditional red sherwani designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee, paired with a large green necklace around her neck.

For Saturday’s blessing ceremony, Merchant once again wore a traditional piece via Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, who collaborated with newcomer artist and sculptor Jayshree Burman to create a unique piece embroidered with real gold.

The outfit celebrates the couple’s union “through deeply meaningful imagery,” the service provider’s stylist Rhea Kapoor wrote on Instagram. “The human figures representing the happy couple radiate a divine aura that honors the divinity in their humanity. The creatures reflect Anant’s love for animals, especially elephants, which are considered auspicious and beautiful.”

For the reception on Sunday, visitors interpreted the “Indian chic” dress code by mixing vintage Indian style with fresh styles. The service provider wore a gold steel corset from Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda Couture sequence along with a skirt and dupatta in a similar silhouette by Indian fashion designer Anamika Khanna.

It is not known for certain how much Ambani spent on the celebrations, which included months of events leading up to the wedding, although industry estimates put it firmly within the multi-million dollar figure. Insiders worked for months for the couple’s survival, attending to the populace in order to detail the intricate details – from floral displays to finished designs – into combination.

Renowned wedding fashion designer Preston Bailey, who has worked with Serena Williams and LeBron James, was commissioned to assemble larger-than-life floral artwork installations for the weekend.

Speaking to CNN via email ahead of Friday’s ceremony, Bailey advised paying attention to the election of Ambani’s mother Nita. “She was nothing short of pure genius and is really focused on bringing the vast creative talent of India to the world through these weddings,” he said.

Bailey’s designs were inspired by the couple’s love of animals and Ambani’s recent opening of Vantara, an animal sanctuary in the western Indian city of Jamnagar. His sculptural creations included hot air balloons and a massive display of over 60 floral animals, including giraffes, two giant toucans, monkeys sitting in trees throughout the site, and a giant horse made of red and scarlet plants.

Bailey said, “I’ve been in the business for over 40 years… (but) I’ve never seen anything as complex as this wedding and I believe it will be such a positive addition to the great creative culture of India’s artists.” Will bring response and awareness.” Also officiated at the weddings of Ambani’s two siblings, Akash and Isha.

Indian couturier and inventive director of the wedding, Manish Malhotra, previously told CNN that “retaining the essence of India” was his “guiding principle.”

“Every detail, from the decor and food to the costumes and ambiance; “Each event, from the live music (a traditional evening of music and dance that featured a performance by Justin Bieber) to the formal wedding day and grand reception, is designed to immerse guests in an atmosphere of joy, love and celebration,” They said. Complaint and stability

Details of the celebrations dominated local news headlines and sparked outrage on social media, but many in India – the world’s most populous community with 1.4 billion people – criticized the prosperity on display in a country with a huge wealth gap. Crores of people everywhere live in poverty.

“Shame on people who celebrate income inequality in a country where we need wealth redistribution,” tweeted Shamita Yadav, a comedian and social media critic who posts on social media under the name The Ranting Gola.

“We are a really poor country,” Sushant Singh, senior fellow at the Center for Policy Analysis, told Indian news outlet The Twin. “This is something that is completely unacceptable. But the truth of the matter is that half of India’s big media is owned by Mr Ambani, so it is unlikely that India’s big media will say this is terrible.

Beyond the monetary value of weddings and celebrations there is another, much lesser optical value: the one and only for the planet.

According to Ashwin Malvade, co-founder of GreenMyna, an average Indian wedding of 300 people typically results in between 1.5 to 2 tonnes of waste, and around 30 to 40 tonnes of carbon emissions – before taking into account guest advances. . , a sustainable wedding consultancy based in Mumbai. The wealth of emissions comes with impressive effort through massive banquets and extravagant glitter presentations.

He said an event on the scale of an Ambani-led birthday celebration would emit more carbon than even the largest and grandest Indian wedding ceremony. Moving on later, several high-profile attendees were photographed departing from Mumbai using the private jet terminal of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Global Airport.

Malavade also pointed to the environmental aspects of the Ambani family’s pre-wedding ceremony in Jamnagar, which was attended by celebrities from around the world including Mark Zuckerberg, Ivanka Trump, Bill Gates and Karlie Kloss; A four-day cruise organized for visitors in the Mediterranean Sea; And the emissions required to fly singers like Rihanna and Justin Bieber on various occasions.
