Adios, the queen who never was.

Spoilers for the fourth episode of “House of the Dragon” below.

Rhaenys (Eve Easiest) is killed off in this paced episode of “House of the Dragon”, the biggest character to die so far (and her dragon, Malleus). It also seriously injures King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney).

The “Game of Thrones” spin-off series takes place approximately 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” following a civil war among the Targaryen people. Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is the rightful queen, although her half-brother Aegon (Glynn-Carney) usurps her throne. With two other siblings claiming they are the rightful emperors, dominion is divided – and neither side has yet fought each other over dragons.

The episode sees Rhaenys – who is on Rhaenyra’s side in the war – attacking the battlefield alongside Aegon and his fierce brother, Aemond (Evan Mitchell), with the three of them wielding their dragons.

Aemond rides the most important and oldest dragon, Vhagar, so it’s no surprise that he is the one who leads her safely out of the conflict.

Since Aegon is king, he’s no longer meant to put himself in danger. His presence in this war was unplanned, although he was rarely seen.

“He’s often branded as a villain, and I see him more as a tragedy,” Glynn-Carney recently told The Post. “That’s heartbreaking. He is broken in many ways.”

Aegon acts unexpectedly, forced to fight to prove himself – because he knows deep down he is no longer the king’s subject. And, as Glynn-Carney points out, this will have devastating consequences for them.

Aegon thinks that his brother, Aemond, is his trusted enforcer. However, Aegon has also bullied his brother for years, and he has mocked him cruelly.

So, Emond makes a good point about the situation. Generation Aemond is trying to unleash dragon fire on his enemy Rhaenys, Aegon is in his way – and Aemond isn’t waiting for his brother to get out. He nukes his brother with dragon fire, taking advantage of the fact that they are high in the sky, so his soldiers in the field can’t clearly see Aemond burning their king.

A tough crack for Aegon, though it haunted Aemond for years after this, no one could say he didn’t have it in him.

It’s a chaotic scene, there’s smoke everywhere. And because dragons fly low, their abundant claws crush even foot soldiers in the field like Godzilla.

Aegon is then subjected to a nuclear attack by his personal brother, both he and his dragon fall from the sky and are forced to die – apparently seriously injured, but their exact fates are unknown. .

Aemond and Rhaenys later clash.

Rhaenys acts as the attacker, pursuing Aemond as he flees. It’s like a suicide project, since Aemond has the larger and fiercer dragon – though Rhaenys both has a slim hope that she will defeat Aemond, or is eager to die if she makes him unharmed with her.

Just when it seems as if Rhaenys may depart from this war with her generation, Aemond and Vhagar offer her an assassination plot. Rhaenys and her dragon fell and died.

This build is a huge blow, and a gamble away from the aspect of Rhaenyra’s war effort.

Rhaenys was Rhaenyra’s best friend, her only expression of understanding on her often squabbling Little Council. She was also the wife of Corliss (Steve Toissaint), another prominent dude who controls the ships – so, depending on how he reacts to his wife’s death, Rhaenyra may be facing two of her worst fates at once. May lose strong allies. fell swoop.

Then having killed Rhaenys, Aemond dismounts his dragon and travels through the forest to where Aegon and his dragon lie in the field.

Aemond has his sword out, meaning he plans to complete the process if Aegon is not still lifeless.

However, Kristen Cole (Fabian Frankel), the newly appointed Hand of the King (and his mother’s hidden lover), prevents Aemond from killing Aegon.

The episode ends on that ominous note.

So, Rhaenyra’s side of the war suffered a major blow in losing Rhaenys – but Aegon’s side also took a major gamble, as he is now out of charge.

“House of the Dragon” airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on HBO (and streams on Max).
