You’ve dabbled in Empire Situation development, praised the structure along the Chicago River, and described San Francisco’s streets as overpriced and run-down.
Thick American towns have points of interest in spades – and crowds, too. This summer, we’re taking a look at small towns that aren’t already at the top of everyone’s walking travel list – playgrounds where you’ll still find small-town vibes and lots of character, along with plenty of fun and adventure. There will be a lot to see. Do it for a few days or more.
At CNN Go, we used our community of members to submit nominations for our inaugural list of the best cities in the United States to get advice from. We evaluated their favorites and narrowed the finalists down to ten by taking a look at each city’s attractions, food and drink options, nightlife and cultural scene, sense of identity, proximity to alternative attention-grabbing venues and the wow factor. We additionally checked the walking requirements, including accommodation options and leisure stays in and around the place.
Our possible options range from about 50,000 citizens to about 225,000. They’re spread across the country and are a reminder of what’s great about America: communities dedicated to making their cities better. You’ll see that spirit in revitalized neighborhoods and cities and in citizens who have put all their interest, creativity and technology into efforts that feed souls and stomachs.
Here are our 2024 options listed:
Prime Ratings: Tranquil lakeside ambiance, outdoor activities, drinking scene
A small town best known over time as a trading, ore-shipping port on the Lakes, Duluth is now gaining a name as a safe haven from environmental disaster. Due to the stunning climate surrounding Poodle, its summers are generally quite temperate. The mountain town has plenty of outdoor activities, a great beer scene, lakeside sightseeing, and a lively group showcasing handmade goods. You’ll meet jovial Duluthians in a country sauna followed by a dip in tranquil Amity Creek.
Prime Ratings: Down-to-earth vibes, live tunes, get right out
It’s likely you know Knoxville as the University of Tennessee and home of the orange and white tsunami of fans at sporting events. Or you may know it as the host of the 1982 International Truthful and its unique glass tower. But did you know that this East Tennessee city also offers a booming music scene (beware of Nashville and Memphis!), cozy old theaters, and delicious food? And there is 1,500 acres of city wilderness area for easy access for outdoor travel.

Prime Ratings: Artwork and design, beer scene, outdoor activities
A remote town with a world-class sculpture clay and community artwork, Magnificent Rapids is even better than “Beer City USA.” However, with more than 100 breweries, distilleries, and cideries, Michigan’s second-largest city comes through honestly when it comes to its drinking monikers. The museums showcase Magnificent Rapids’ deep design roots, with Magnificent River a nod to its family-friendly outdoors. And a thoughtful amphitheater along the river is just one part of a larger waterfront revitalization effort.
Prime Ratings: Musical heritage, cultural points of interest, structure
With museums and a revitalized studio dedicated to its musical heritage, Mâcon scores great ratings based on cultural points of interest and the types of local institutions loved across generations. Macon’s revitalized downtown has made way for underserved restaurants, bars, and a boutique lodge. And with an effort to establish a website containing thousands of years of historical past on Georgia’s First American Nation lands and co-managed through the Muscogee (Creek) population, the city is paying attention to how its early history How does one talk with it? Moment.

Prime Ratings: Bright skies, outdoor activities, surroundings, unfashionable atmosphere
The bright days and starry nights greatly attract this high altitude city. Because of the San Francisco Peaks, diverse nationwide monuments, the Lowell Observatory and Flagstaff’s status as an unlit Sky Town, it’s easy to play in the beautiful grounds and wonders of the universe in Flagstaff. Course 66 passes through here, where fashionable hotels cater to tourists staying there, and the renaissance in the city is worth seeing. The local American historical past of the section is another reason to talk about it.
Prime Ratings: Beautiful surroundings, Trendy atmosphere, Outdoor activities, Wineries
If you’re dreaming of an old-time, laid-back California vibe, the ultra-expensive Bay Segment and traffic-clogged Southern California just won’t do it. However, figuratively and literally there is a park in the middle that is a lovely retreat to coolness, 20th-Shatabdi yellow condition. Later, they didn’t name San Luis Obispo “SLO” for nothing. Here, you’ll enjoy everything from wine trails to hiking trails with no regard for humanity. The expansive herbal environment, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is the cherry on top.

Prime Ratings: Next-level dining scene, coastal setting, outdoor access
This historic port town offers some seriously fresh food alongside classics reflecting Maine’s status as the USA Lobster Capital. The food scene here has clearly put it on the map as a culinary destination, with two unused James Beard Awards added to the city’s collection. You’ll also find a burgeoning craft beer scene and plenty of options for getting out on the aqua or on the planks. Wander through the bustling heart of the city to glimpse centuries of maritime history and the rebirth of the Victorian era.
Prime Ratings: Excellent surroundings, outdoor access, art scene
The city setting couldn’t be better than this. Tacoma’s location between Puget Tone and Mount Rainier offers remarkable outdoor recreation in and around the city. There are also some pretty impressive attractions within the city, thanks to Dale Chihuly, art glass master and Tacoma local. At the Museum of Glass, shows of paintings and glassblowers in its dazzling shop tell the story of the medium. And the flying tour gives you an excellent view of the sacred ancestral lands of the Puyallup Tribe.

Prime Ratings: Artwork, structure, design, food scene
Windfall’s bright downtown riverfront exists because of a long time of inspired paintings that moved across the rivers and streets to decorate and protect the city. Downtown’s rivers have been dancing in the light of Waterfire installed favorite art for many years, and community art is everywhere. The city may also be home to the famous Rhode Island College of Design and its museum. Architecture buffs will find much to learn, and Windfall’s culinary history (with excellent seafood and Italian cuisine) and numerous restaurants will let you enjoy an international feast.
Prime Ratings: Cultural points of interest, Food and drinks, Naughty neighborhoods
Richmond, Virginia – or “RVA” – deserves more of the national attention enjoyed by that alternative capital city a few hours north. Richmond earns gorgeous ratings for its top museums and dynamic neighborhoods, and it’s taking a look back at its troubled historical past. In addition, it features a diverse, chef-driven food scene, over 30 breweries, and access to environmental wine country. And there’s a nearly year-round lineup of festivals — mark your calendars for the Richmond Public Festival in the fall.
