Elden Ring: Shade of the Erdtree is about everything, and with it comes a whole host of ancient bosses to terrorize you. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki himself says that one of Shades of the Erdtree’s most bosses was designed to push gamers to their limits, and then upon completing the DLC, we’re unable to agree.

So finally we decided to rank all the ancient bosses in Shade of the Erdtree, from least difficult to most difficult. One notable caveat is that there are many more bosses than we’ve listed here within the DLC. Alternatively, we’ve decided to rank only the primary bosses – the ones that leave memories that you’ll later take in exchange for legendary equipment and guns.

And naturally, this is probably one of the most spoiler-filled lists we have for Shade of the Erdtree, so don’t know for those who haven’t completed the DLC.

So with all these thoughts, here are the toughest bosses of Shade of the Erdtree listed!

10. Romina, Saint of Bud

Credit Score: From Software, Bandai Namco

Even though Romina is bossy for a while, she’s eventually no longer very strict. Playing a sort of play on Melania’s scarlet rot boss, Romina is a fancy magician whose number one attack causes scarlet rot to those who stay in her poisonous fumes for too long. Dodging them, and he can also send explosive butterflies at you.

Thankfully, it’s a little easier to leave those damaging AoEs to get your hits in until he’s defeated. Whether you’re a melee player or a spellcaster, Romina rarely takes a fight regardless of how late in the game you’ll encounter her.

9. Scadutree Avatar

One of the heaviest bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree, the Scadutree incarnation can be huge, but is hilariously plentiful, making it easy to miss. Hidden in a secret part of the Shade Preserve, the Scadutree incarnation is a giant sunflower monster that takes fat swipes and will cause some major bleeding bruises on the ups and downs. You will also have to fight it three times in a row.

Thankfully, like the optional Fat FromSoftware bosses, the Scadutree Avatar’s attacks are easy to avoid, and the boss’s main problem is overcoming it three times more often than any of its unedited attacks.

8. Metir, mother of hands

Despite falling to the base of the list, Metier remains an extremely tough boss due to his mix of fat, physical AoE attacks and the ability to fire lasers and other miscellaneous abilities. Get too close and the Meteor can crush you in the side like a Trojan Horse, attacking from a distance risks getting shot with a pretty hard beam attack.

He also has an obnoxious ability to summon some goons to aid him, which will get very tiresome very fast. However, Metier is quite vulnerable to Necromancy, so depending on his size you will be softening his fitness bar for a while.

7. Divine animal dancing lion

Depending on how carefully you’re following the critical path, the Divine Beast Dancing Lion is probably the primary boss you’ll see in the Shade of Erdtree DLC, and FromSoftware definitely enjoys the atmosphere of the bar top.

The Divine Beast hits crisp, strikes fast, and can shift between taking pictures of the lighting, blasting you with frost, or blasting you with the wind. It’s true that FromSoftware is wrestling, so be able to dodge, duck, dive, dive, and get in one, possibly two, hits before repeating. One reason why Divine Beast ranks so low on the checklist is because the optional bosses are just plain tougher.

6. Relana, Dual Moon Night

Rellana follows a rich tradition of duel-style bosses where players feel as if they are going one-on-one with another player personality, similar to Artorius and the female Maria. Renalla’s sister, Rellana is an extraordinary knight who combines vicious swordsmanship with a magic-focused 2D section where she will wield both fire and ice towards you.

A mix of close-combat hits, long-range AoE, and a one-hit necromancy attack that took this editor a few hours to determine how one could combat, Rellana was the first boss I caught, she meant it. That I spent several days trying to defeat him, even with the help of NPC summons.

5. Midra, lord of frenzied flame

In a way, Midra and Rellana are slightly homogeneous bosses that make the most of their similar attack style of a mix of close-range sword attacks and long-range skills. The simplest thing about Midra is that its long-range attacks are frenzy rather than necromancy. The main differences between the two bosses are that Midra is a little faster, Frenzy is a little more annoying to trade with, and she has more upside for AoE than Rellana.

Additionally, in line with the Frenzy Flame title, Midra’s attack patterns are decidedly more chaotic, meaning it’s a bit difficult to find patterns to avoid her attacks.

4. Sonless knight

The Putrescent Knight gave me thick Bloodborne vibes, not only from its design as a gooey, skeletal knight riding a muddy horse, but also from its constant attacks. Putrescent Night always strikes a little more often than you expect, which means just when you think you’re in the sun and able to take a sip from your flask, oops! He’s hitting you again and now you’re lifeless.

What’s more, it can also be a headache to deal with the Putrescent Knight’s bad habit of dropping his horse and switching between two enemies for a short period of time.

3. Commander Gaius

While speaking with my fellow early entrants to the Shade of the Erdtree audience, Gaius appeared in the “hardest boss” dialogue several times. Like a remixed version of Redahan from the ground game, Commander Gaius descends onto the battlefield on a mighty boar to crush players. Live to tell that tale? Cleverly he equips the enamel with gravity necromancy which he can later emphasize in the second section to overwhelm you.

The biggest problem with Commander Gaius is that you have to be excellent with your time. If you fail to avoid him even once, he will most likely knock you out in one go. However, like Radan, if you are facing him head on and get your timing great, you should be in for an excellent playing field for an epic match.

2. Mesmer the Impaler

FromSoftware has prominently marketed Mesmer the Impaler as a shade of DLC, and there’s excellent reason for that. Mesmer’s boss fight is possibly one of the hardest in the entire DLC and possibly the game. A two-part conflict, Mesmer begins his attack with his powerful spear, striking with abundant force. Now Mesmer isn’t the fastest, however his fire attack and counters make his first phase a pain to trade.

Sadly, the second half is where the real struggle begins as he gets to add a giant snake to his arsenal. You’ll have to avoid both Mesmer and Snake because if either of them gets one of your books, it’s likely game over. Whether you’re stuck in the snake’s jaws as he slams you into the ground, or trading blows with Mesmer’s fiery grip that can kill you with almost a single bullet, Mesmer is a crispy boss to learn, and a good tough one. This is to trick the boss.

1. Promised Consort Radahan

Successfully the “final boss” of the DLC, I think the promised Consort Radahan is what director Hidetaka Miyazaki may have been referring to when he mentioned pushing the boundaries of what a boss issue could be for the DLC.

Simply put, Promised Consort Radahan is relentless. In its first section, Radahan’s measurements belie his absolute velocity. Dry-hitting, fast-paced, you’ll be lucky to get through his first section unscathed between his massive sword swings, gravity attacks, and plentiful fitness bars.

The second part, on the other hand, seems completely inaccessible. Adding Mikaela’s holy attacks to Redahan’s moveset leaves the field shield nowhere for the player. As Holy Rays continue to rain down repeatedly around the pair, Promise Consort Radahan is also now able to burst out at a faster rate, sickening the player at extremely high rates of speed, and sometimes even knocking out the latter. Takes. It successfully takes away gamers’ biggest talent: the dodge roll.

It’ll take frame-perfect motion, stealth, and possibly more than a minute of good luck to get through this two-part boss fight. But I promise that in time the feeling will be worth it.

Thus we rank the toughest boss fights within the Ancient Elden Ring DLC, Shade of the Erdtree. Let us know in the feedback which bosses are offering you special Crispy Dates, and be sure to try out our Shade of the Erdtree overview for those who haven’t already.
