Euro 2024 has reached the final round of the group stage, which will decide who advances to the knockouts. Along with the top two teams in each of the six groups, the four best third-placed teams will also make the last-16, while the remaining eight countries will be eliminated from the tournament.

Next up is Group C after a dramatic and potentially crucial end to Group D, where Austria topped the group ahead of France and the Netherlands. England are already in Group C, but now have more incentive to top the group and reach the more favorable side of the knockouts.

In the last two editions of the European Championships where a 24-team format has been used, four points have always been enough for the third-placed team to advance to the last-16. While three points is sometimes enough, it does not guarantee a place in the next round. Two points weren’t enough to finish as one of the four best third-place teams at Euro 2016 or Euro 2020, but there is a way that could be possible at Euro 2024.

There are sure to be plenty of upsets as the final round matches are played, with both matches from each group starting simultaneously over the next four evenings. Here’s how the groups are looking, along with all the important permutations and a ranking of the third-place teams at Euro 2024., Jump down to UEFA’s own tiebreaker rules!

group c

Permutation

England: Gareth Southgate’s side reach the last-16 with a game remaining, as four points now confirm England will finish as one of the four best third-placed teams even if they lose to Slovenia. If England beats Slovenia they will top the group. If England draw, Denmark will have a chance to overtake them on goal difference if they beat Serbia. Slovenia and Denmark can both finish above England but Serbia cannot do so due to head-to-head position.

Denmark: The win over Serbia confirmed their place in the last-16. If England beats Slovenia then a draw is enough for second place, while if Denmark and Slovenia both draw then second place will be awarded on goals scored.

Slovenia: Similar to above, Slovenia will advance if they beat England, but a draw will be enough to guarantee second place if Denmark also draws and Slovenia has the advantage on goals. If Slovenia draws against England and Serbia fails to beat Denmark, they will eliminate Croatia.

Serbia: Denmark must be defeated, any other result will be inadequate. If Serbia wins and Slovenia does not beat England, they will become runners-up.

group d

Permutation

Austria: In an unexpected finish in Group D, Austria beat the Netherlands while France dropped points against France. Austria tops the group and will play the Group F runners-up in the last-16.

France: That was not in the script. Kylian Mbappe returned but could not help France to victory as Les Bleus left with five points and just second place in Group D.

Netherlands: Having already reached the last-16 before kick-off, the Dutch missed the chance to progress among the group winners and may now face a tough last-16 clash.

Poland: Defeats to the Netherlands and Austria meant that Poland were eliminated before their final game, but they restored some pride by claiming a point against France.

Result

Hamburg: Poland 1-2 Netherlands

Dusseldorf: Austria 0-1 France

Berlin: Poland 1-3 Austria

Leipzig: Netherlands 0-0 France

Berlin: Netherlands 2-3 Austria

Dortmund: France 1-1 Poland

group e

Permutation

All four teams of the group level are reaching the final round with three points, so all will have to play in Group E. In a way, it’s easy for the four teams involved: win and you’re in last place. -16.

Romania: Will move ahead with victory. If Romania draws against Slovakia, both teams will have four points. If Romania draws and there is a winner in the game between Belgium and Ukraine, Romania will finish second on goal difference. If both games end as draws, it will again go down to goals, so for example, 2-2 for Romania would be better than 1-1 for Belgium. If Romania loses and the second game is drawn, Romania will finish fourth and be eliminated. If Romania loses but wins in the second game between Belgium and Ukraine, they will finish third if the loser is Ukraine and fourth if the loser is Belgium.

Belgium: Similar to above, with a few differences. If the second game is a draw or Romania beats Slovakia, Belgium will win against Ukraine and top the group. Belgium will advance if both games end as draws, and they will finish second with a draw and a winner in the second game between Romania and Slovakia. If Belgium loses, they will finish third if Slovakia wins and fourth if Romania wins.

Slovakia: Can advance with a win or a draw against Romania. Slovakia finished third with a draw, while they and Belgium would also finish third if they both lose. If Slovakia loses and Belgium wins, they will finish fourth.

Ukraine: Can proceed with a win against Belgium. A draw would be enough to finish third with four points, but only if there is a winner in the second game between Romania and Slovakia. If all four teams finish on four points, Ukraine will be eliminated on goal difference. If Romania beats Slovakia then a defeat will be enough for third.

group f

Permutation

Portugal: The groups remain winners with one game remaining. Portugal will play one of the four best third-placed teams in the last-16 on Monday 1 July in Frankfurt.

turkey: The heavy defeat to Portugal was a blow to Turkey’s goal difference but they can move on with a win over the Czech Republic. A draw should also be fine and if Georgia fails to beat Portugal it will be good enough for second place. If Turkey loses to the Czech Republic and Georgia beats Portugal it will be out – but if they lose and Georgia fails to win it will finish third. The goal difference will decide whether it is enough to advance or not.

Czechia: Türkiye must be defeated to have a chance of progressing. If the Czech Republic wins and Georgia has a better result, they will finish second. If they draw or lose and Georgia wins, they will be eliminated. If they draw or lose and Georgia match their result, goal difference will decide who finishes third, but their points total is unlikely to be enough.

Georgia: They must beat Portugal, but two points will not be enough. If Georgia and the Czech Republic both win, it will come down to goal difference, with the Czechs currently ahead by one. If Türkiye wins or draws, Georgia’s victory will only be enough for third. If Georgia loses but the Czech Republic loses by more then they could finish third, but this is unlikely to be enough to advance.
