Europe, it’s heating so quickly, nearly twice as quick as the of the Earth. Indeed, this exceptional heat is causing a death effects to a great number of people, especially when the summer month intervenes, as per the recent findings from a report presented by Europe’s climate professionals.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Deaths caused by heat in Europe has got a nudge of about, I would say, 30% in the previous two decades? Yes, by at least 30% in the span of last 20 years; findings have been reported by Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service in companion with the United Nations.
José Álvaro Silva of the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization stated that, “The impact of human health, more can be seen in cities”, where the majority of people live, not only because people live crammed in cities. But also, its the cities that are getting heated more quickly than the rural places due to the buildings and roads. They takes a longer time duration for them to cool down.
Heat at its dangerous best was clearly visible in the summer of 2023. A heat wave in July made the people of Southern Europe feel like as if the temperature is 110 degrees or even more.
Things could get dangerous for people, without access to air conditioner in such kind of weather condition. It’s still under calculation, the final count of deaths from that heatwave but certainly it is going to be in tens of thousands, the researchers have found. One study predicted an increase of 60,000 premature deaths because of the July 2023 heat wave.
Chris Hewitt, leading the World Meteorological Organization, mentioned “Extreme heat creates the greatest risk of mortality out of all extreme weather”.
A blend of three main elements are responsible for the rapid warming of Europe. The first one is its nearness to the Arctic, the region on Earth which is warming up the fastest. Additionally, it lays close to the warm ocean and atmospheric currents, that’s why London’s winter are quite warm than Chicago’s. Even though London is more to the north, it’s simple isn’t it?
But that, of course, is leading to more heat in Europe compared to places similar in the latitude. This point has been outlined by Samantha Burgess, who is the deputy director for the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
New records are created all the time, informed Burgess. “We would not go out in the snow without a coat, so we should not stay in the house in summer without air-condition”
High danger of heat had led the European cities to ensure the accessibility of air conditioners for its residents as well as keeping the electricity running in the peak hot days. Deadly heatwaves causing blackouts has been one of the major issues worldwide. When the power grid cannot stand the extremely hot weather, where in fact, the weather report comes with some good news.
The dependency on solar and wind for electricity is gaining grounds in Europe, and, the energy from these sources has turned more reliable. 2023 was an unbroken sequel year in which more electricity in Europe was generated from renewable sources compared to the fossil fuels.
The turn of events, shifting away from coal, oil and gas for electricity is helping Europe to cut down its emission of greenhouse gases that heat up the planet which will help in reducing the warming in the future.
