Ahead of its August 23 foundation, we finally got our hands on Firewalk Studios’ live provider hero shooter, Cohesion. Sony’s bold multiplayer gambit didn’t fare the best when it first debuted. game play sizeHowever, now that we have come to a point with the game, is this going to cause a survival provider crash in the future?
Self-belief is the secret right here, and regardless of people’s intended stance against hero shooters, Harmony moves forward with all the graphical and musical bombast you’d expect from a Sony first-party experience. We’re a sucker for some excellent UI and menu design, and Cohesion has all that, and a positive “big deal” vibe to it all that we’ve found infectious.
The beta includes access to certain formats, four maps, all 16 characters, and several unlockable cosmetics – none of which will be upgraded in full for free. What we have right now is mainly Workforce Deathmatch, Shoot Shod, and round-based capture the level form. It’s not like anything you haven’t played before, so where Cohesion tries to differentiate itself is in its characters and gameplay.
The first-person shooting is surprisingly tight, and the parks recall Future 2’s floaty gameplay – which is no surprise considering the pre-Bungie prowess in Firewalker’s way. Across all 16 characters you’ll have your standard archetypes of tank, healer, attacker and support, however where the cohesion succeeds is in the gameplay loops you’ll find inside each character.
TO is all about the use of smoke bombs to eliminate visibility and then using your scope to identify enemies and eliminate them with your composite bombs. 1-Off sends his barreled trash bombs to harass enemies, using his vacuum to protect the squad. Jabali is a front-line healer who can take down enemy positions with his Seeker rifle, heal task forces with his healing air of mystery, and deliver reliable wounds with his hunter orbs.
The list goes on, but like many of the best hero shooters, the thrill lies in playing your part and supporting your team – something that was unusually offered during our randomly matched sessions over the weekend. Of course there may be favorites, like the high-damage Hemar or the self-healing Lennox, but it was great to see such a variety of selections throughout the matches, with no clear leader. Firewalk has clearly put together a balanced roster of heroes in which everyone has a thing for their business.
On the other hand, the most unexpected aspect of Cohesion is that it manages to strike a balance between a hero shooter, with a long ability to shoot and move around targets and a field shooter like Ready to happen. Hit streaks.
It is in that basic exchange that we find harmony just maybe Thrive, because it’s a defined gameplay loop that we couldn’t get enough of. Talents recharge for a short period of time and can also be replenished due to subsequent kills, so the battlefield has a more dynamic feel. We’re guilty of keeping our abilities straight for the “right moment” in hero shooters, but every movement here is precise movement – and even though it’s not, you won’t be punished more for it.
Fitness is also a big thing, think about all this. Your status isn’t going to regenerate naturally, so you’ll have to negotiate some status pick-up issues, or rely on healing teammates. It’s not something we were too excited about to begin with, but ultimately it affects the way you play the game, and adds another tale of madness to Cohesion’s bow.
This is just the beginning of the incredible fun we’re in right here push square. We’re extremely excited, but there are still a lot of things we’re not sure about as to what our future will look like with the beta. For example, if you played the beta you’ve done a dozen level ups, but it’s not exactly clear who you’re leveling up for. Daily, weekly, and seasonally demanding situations increase XP, which increases your profile level, although finishing suits also increases the level of your specific personality. It appears that cosmetics are the focal point, but if what we have right now is any indication of what’s to come, it’s certainly sparse. Luckily Freeganer has been able to release personality variants with different passive skills in demanding situations, which we believe might be a pleasant explanation as to why stay tuned for “another game.” .
Next are the weekly shorts. What we’ve seen at this point are some majestic feature cutscenes that are probably rare in any defining features. They are simply put in motion to some extent, although we can hardly expect that we will ever fall in love with those characters. We very much need to see how sustainable and how effective this storytelling strategy is, because from the micro titles we have so far, Firewalk is clearly looking to build an elaborate lore.
In fact, despite this, our biggest gripe with Cohesion is that its stream forms don’t stick around long enough to really get into motion. The TDM and Shoot Shod forms ask for only 30 items from each workforce, and are usually finished within 5 minutes. Obviously these days we don’t have access to the full list of forms, but we hope to have something more widely available on the basis. As it stands, its suits are pretty bittersweet, where things are really getting hot, they’re over.
Cohesion is a delightfully colorful and robust shooter that almost feels able to progress. There have been bad server crashes, laggy suites, system faults, or really nothing of the sort around beta weekend. It’s a sophisticated experience that Sony seems capable of taming the Patheon, and we guess gamers will have to give it a chance. Is this possibly the most unedited mob hit in the hero shooter genre? Disagree, although this is a sophisticated and top class product that already has a strong base to develop from. We have some questions that we suspect won’t be answered until fully released, and we would have liked to have left a minute longer, but as it stands, Harmony has worked its way up to the reigns of our max. Have made the expectation.
