An Israeli airstrike has killed 10 civilians, including Ismail Haniyeh, a key Hamas figure in the Shatti refugee camp in northern Gaza, according to Palestinian workers and the enclave’s civil defense company.

Confirming the attack on the Haniyeh population and the collection of dead, Hamas said on Tuesday that it held US President Joe Biden’s leadership responsible for continuing the war of “extermination” against the Palestinian community in the Gaza Strip.

It said the United States was moving to provide Israel with “political and military cover and time to accomplish the task of destruction and devastation in the Strip.”

Civil Protection Agency spokesman Mahmoud Bassal told AFP news agency that the attack on Tuesday morning targeted a populated house in Haniyeh in Shati.

“Ten people have been martyred as a result of the attack, including Zaher Haniyeh, the sister of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh,” Bassal said. The tools needed to take them back are there”.

Civil defense forces transferred the bodies to the al-Ahli clinic within Gaza City, Bassal said, adding that “several people were injured” in the attack.

In a comment, Hamas called on “the international community and the United Nations to shoulder their responsibility for these ongoing horrific crimes, take immediate action to protect innocent civilians, and hold the terrorist leaders of the occupation accountable for their crimes.” ,

The Israeli military said two structures were targeted on the same day in Shati and Daraj Tufah, claiming that warring parties involved in the October 7 attack on Israel were holed up inside, before the section battle. Its overview posted on social media did not mention the establishment of Haniyeh population houses.

Al Jazeera staff in the garden said the dead from the Haniyeh population included Zahar Abdel Salam Haniyeh, Nahed Haniyeh Abu Ghazi, Iman Haniyeh Umm Ghazi, Ismail Nahed Haniyeh, Muhammad Nahed Haniyeh, Moamen Nahed Haniyeh, Zahra Nahed Haniyeh, Amal Nahed Haniyeh, Shahad Are included. Nahed Haniyeh and Sumaya Nahed Haniyeh.

‘Killing and maiming’ of civilians

In April, Haniyeh’s 3 sons and 4 grandchildren were killed in an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza, with the military accusing him of “terrorist activities”.

On this occasion, Haniyeh said that about 60 people from his population had been killed since the Israeli conflict on Gaza on October 7. More than 37,600 people from the region have been killed in this conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that fighting will continue despite a ceasefire with Hamas.

Haniyeh issued a comment on Tuesday, declaring that any ceasefire proposal that does not promise an end to Israel’s offensive in Gaza is “not a deal.”

“If the criminal enemy thinks that targeting my family will change our position or that of the resistance, they are delusional,” the observation said.

His comments came as Gaza civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal told Al Jazeera that Israeli forces had deliberately targeted five displacement camps in less than 48 hours.

It also comes as Philip Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Sleep and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), reiterated threats about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The humanitarian situation in southern Gaza has “significantly deteriorated” since the Israeli military incursion into Rafah in recent days, he said, adding that “the threat of famine in Gaza continues”.

Additionally, he said more needed to be done to deal with the crisis in the Garden, including a ceasefire and increased humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza.

At least 10 Palestinians, including guards protecting an aid van, were killed in an Israeli attack on the community of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza on Tuesday in search of aid supplies.

The situation in hospitals around the besieged coastal enclave has become even more dire with Israel closing the vital Rafah border crossing on May 7, according to Maureen Kaki, logistics coordinator for Clinical Staff Glia.

The scientific group of workers “do not have the supplies needed to treat seriously injured patients. They are exhausted themselves, and on top of that, they are dealing with injuries at a level they do not have the material for,” she told Al Jazeera.

“We’re not even talking about people with chronic diseases like cancer (or those who have needs like dialysis). We’re talking about people stabilizing patients who are otherwise going to die,” Kaki said.

Also on Tuesday, UN Heart East envoy Tor Wennesland warned about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

At a UN Security Council briefing, Wennesland condemned “the killing and maiming of civilians, including women and children, in Gaza”.

“Israel’s use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas has destroyed entire neighborhoods and damaged hospitals and other civilian infrastructure, schools, mosques and United Nations compounds,” he said.
