“Longlegs” (Neon) and “Fly Me to the Moon” (Sony) are projected to return to second and third place this weekend with a combined gross of $30 million-$35 million. That section came. Although Apple’s rom-com starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum was expected to gross second place, possibly at least $15 million (previous estimates were higher), Jens Onnes Perkins’ original horror-thriller starring Nicolas Cage was expected to gross $10 million. There was hope. Or extra.
In turn, “Longlegs” took the 2nd place with $22.6 million, the generation “Fly” is started with $10 million (for others it is less), and is only in the 5th playing field. Both are making an impact.
With a budget and advertising of less than $10 million, “Longlegs” made more in just one weekend than the two Neon films (“Parasite” and “I, Tonya”). Given the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of “The Blair Witch Project”, it has a lot in common with the sudden initial huge return to mind.
“Blair Witch”, which started the found-footage horror genre and was some way off its peak, opened limitedly, earning over $60 million as its first big hit and eventually grossing over $300 million. Earned. Other opportunities, other results. Even though the two shared the honor of stepping out in the middle of the summer season, Neon neatly bankrolled its film and gave this momentum industry a chance to step out. The venture was completed. This is even more important with so many horror films constantly being released and Cage starring in brand new films. Saturday’s Inappropriate ranked above Friday’s (aside from previews), which is a good sign for word of mouth respect as opposed to a C+ CinemaScore (similar to “Blair Witch”).

“Moon”, on the other hand, is the original disappointing Apple manufacturing heavily dramatized through a management distributor. Costing $100 million before advertising, even with an A-Cinemascore it failed to gain traction, or demonstrate momentum, during the weekend (its Saturday was only lower than Friday).
The company has multiple movies lined up for release (including “F1” from Warner Bros. later this summer). The lack of any clear sense of spontaneity for Apple after streaming makes it difficult to make the case for a continued dramatic play, and reinforces the sense that Netflix figured this out long ago.
The sixth film in the “Despicable Me”/”Minions” series grossed just under $45 million, nearly double that of any alternative film this weekend. With its first-ever second weekend of 40 PCs, the studio is now aiming for total international grosses of more than $5 billion, putting it ahead of any alternative animated franchise adjusted for inflation.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney) was in third place, just 32 percent behind with $573 million, catching up to “Barbie,” which made $636 million in one hour. “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount), despite “Longlegs” being a festival hit, finished fourth with about $12 million.
In total, 5 films (if “Moon” plays out as projected) made $10 million or more this weekend. This is good, and one thing that even pre-Covid was not automatic in July (no account in 2019, 2018 with 3 out of 4 weekends coming up). The total box office was approximately $127 million, down from $140 million in the previous hour. At present there has been a decrease of 16 percent from 2023 till now.

An unprecedented midsummer awards contender made its mark. “Sing Sing” (A24) with Colman Domingo had a creditable debut of $137,000 ($34,000 per theater) at 4 theaters (pristine York/Los Angeles) as it begins its slow rollout. In a unique move, he is expected to not make a big appearance until August in order to gain the desired prestige and avoid competing with the juggernauts after the next two weeks. The inspirational, prison-set film isn’t guaranteed-to-be-typical fare, so this cautious behavior becomes entirely rational.
A series of alternative civilized restricted openings also began. “National Anthem” (LD/Variance) earned $42,400 in 4 places at Pristine York/Los Angeles. The two documentaries in Pristine York had a special debut, with “Ano” (Movie First) earning $14,446 on movie discussion boards. Its presentation presents a quite different model compared to other days. “America’s Burning” (Abramorama) $11,325 ($15,450 in 4). “Brother Waters: The Sid Abbruzzese Story”, self-distributed by its directors, screened in Newport, Rhode Island for two days (two presentations only) for $12,699 (priced when additional mid-week presentations are purchased for the documentary becomes $25,000).
Opening wide, veteran Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur’s “Touch” (Focal Point) earned $470,000 at 316, with Generations’ “Dandelion” (IFC) only able to claim $65,000 at 446.
