The New York Mets have won two of the first three games of this four-game set with the Pirates and will look to win their third straight and clinch the series on Monday afternoon. The suddenly revitalized Mets also have a chance to move above .500 with a win on Monday. On Sunday afternoon, Francisco Lindor capped off a late rally for the Mets by driving in the tying and go-ahead run with a 9th inning single. The Mets led 1–0 in the bottom of the eighth, but rebounded in the 9th to steal it.
“Big win for the team,” New York manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Finally we scored one. Then, we lost the lead. And then, batting in the ninth, unbelievable.”
The Mets will send righty Christian Scott to the hill against the Pirates on Monday afternoon. He recently returned to the rotation from the IL with an 0-2 record in six starts, including three quality starts. Scott has allowed 30 hits in 33.1 innings with an ERA of 4.32 and a WHIP of 1.14. He has walked eight batters and scored 27 runs while giving up four home runs. In his last start, a 7–5 loss to the Nationals in Washington, Scott allowed six hits in 5.2 innings while giving up four runs and striking out only two batters.

The Pittsburgh Pirates got the thrill of victory and the pain of defeat simultaneously on Sunday afternoon against the Mets. The Pirates entered the bottom of the 8th inning trailing 1–0, but Nick Gonzales’ two-run single off Mets closer Edwin Diaz gave the Pirates a 2–1 lead. With closer Aroldis Chapman on the hill, the Pirates were one step away from victory, but a two-run single with the bases loaded sealed their fate in a 3–2 loss. The Pirates now need a win on Monday to take the lead in the four-match series.
“He got ahead in the count,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “He hit Alvarez 0-2 to start the inning and walked him. He defeated Iglesias 1-2. We were one step away from the game being over. “Overall, getting a grip on the fastball was the biggest thing.”
The Pirates will put their hopes of splitting the series with the Mets on Monday afternoon into the capable hands of righty Mitch Keller. Keller comes into this game with a 9-5 record in 17 starts, including nine quality starts so far. He has allowed 102 hits in 103.1 innings while allowing 10 home runs. Keller has an ERA of 3.48 and a WHIP of 1.25, while he walked 27 batters and struck out 96. In his last start, Keller gave up nine hits and six runs in five innings in a 7–4 loss to the Cardinals at home.
