Updated June 29 with highlights from the restart loop affecting some Windows 11 users.

Timing is everything – and that’s absolutely true for the millions of Microsoft Home Windows users who have the July 4th deadline fast approaching to update their systems.

Just two weeks ago we saw a patched Windows vulnerability resurface. Generation Microsoft had quickly identified negative exploits for CVE-2024-26169, Symantec’s security researchers take a completely different view, with “some evidence” that attackers “had a CVE-2024-26169 exploit before patching.” “Compiled.”

And it is timely that several US government companies, including CISA and the FBI, have collaborated on a cybersecurity advisory ultimatum that “black bag associates have impacted a wide range of businesses and critical infrastructure in North America, Europe and Australia As of May 2024, Black Basta’s associates have impacted over 500 organizations globally.

Timing is everything. And these stories come together – very strangely for Microsoft – as Symantec suggested that it was “Cardinal Cybercrime Group (aka Storm-1811, UNC4393) that operated the Black Basta ransomware” that likely gained privileges. Was exploiting. The vulnerability was raised in Microsoft’s Windows Error Reporting Carrier for several weeks before it was patched in March.

CISA has added CVE-2024-26169 to its Recognized Exploitable Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, marking it as “known to be used in ransomware campaigns” and requiring all Windows systems to be updated or shut down by July 4. It has been made mandatory to do so. This mandate only applies to US federal companies, although CISA says it “urges all organizations to reduce the risk of cyberattacks by prioritizing timely remediation.”

Cloudy Basta has now generated over $100 million in ransomware bills, and so the enterprise will have to remove the negative group’s retirement home Windows technologies. All must implement CISA’s July 4 replacement order. The generation special factor here has very little to do with private customers, update immediately if you haven’t already done so.

Since this newsletter was published, the situation for Windows 11 users has become challenging as news spread of a sudden restart loop affecting some users who installed Windows 11 KB5039302 in June.

Microsoft warned customers that “after installing the update released June 26, 2024 (KB5039302), some devices may fail to start,” advising that “affected systems may restart repeatedly. and recovery operations may be required to restore normal use.”

Don’t be alarmed by those headlines and set out to change as usual.

KB5039302 is not a mandatory update in itself nor a security update – so, put those titles aside and go out as standard. Do not confuse this update with the security patching that resolves the Microsoft Windows Error Reporting Carrier vulnerability. Ultimately, it’s highly likely that your Windows 11 PC will be unaffected by the unused factor. This restart loop affects Project machines running “virtual machine tools and nested virtualization features”, Microsoft said, making home users less likely to crash. Customers will still see related updates available.

The problems covered through CISA’s ultimatum have already been resolved before the June holidays, and given the cloudy attitude, there is a need for immediate relaxation. And that means while Microsoft has pulled KB5039302 for some users, you’ll still need to protect your PC by updating before the July 4th deadline.

The big deal that affects Windows Home customers is now quickly approaching, although that end date is still more than a pace away from October 14, 2025. Just days before Symantec’s file, we saw Microsoft again urging Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11. Worryingly, 70% of users are yet to take action before the imminent end of the game, this problem is becoming more serious and Microsoft glitches have started crashing PCs. international.

When Windows 10 is ending, this support is also ending. No more security updates for customers unwilling to upgrade or pay an unused and expensive annual rate.

And so for all the corporate and private home Windows 1o holdouts. “Now is the time to upgrade your PC before end of support,” Microsoft urges. “End of support for Windows will occur on October 14, 2025. This means your desktop will no longer receive technical support or security updates after that date.”

And it’s not just a chance – never with Windows.
