The All-Star rosters are set.
After the initial roster was announced this week, as voted on by fans, the reserves and pitching staff were announced on Sunday. Those locations were included using both players’ ballots and selections from the commissioner’s office.
Below, we’ll analyze the entire roster and learn about some of the players who were snubbed for this year’s edition of the Midsummer Classic.

In the American League, the AL-East leading Orioles probably have few complaints.
Anthony Sanchez was probably the most surprising omission from any roster on Sunday. He is hitting .233 with 22 homers, 56 RBI, 46 runs scored and a .794 OPS this season.
Craig Kimbrel is second in the American League with 22 saves, trailing only Klaas (26). He also made a strong case for inclusion by the commissioner’s office or by player vote, although it is possible that he was excluded out of the requirement that every team in baseball have at least one selection.
Finally, Oakland’s Brent Rucker (.277 with 18 homers, 54 RBI, 34 runs and an .891 OPS) was a worthy reserve prospect, but did not make the cut this season.
In the National League, the Phillies can’t really complain after having three starters (Bryce Harper, Trey Turner and Alec Bohm) and four pitchers named to the All-Star Game. But Aaron Nola (10-4 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 107 strikeouts) and Christopher Sanchez (6-4 with a 2.96 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 82 strikeouts) have both put together All-Star seasons this year.
However, roster shortages always persisted, and with so many Phillies represented, Nola and Sánchez did not find a spot.
On another basis, most advanced statistics would suggest that Brice Turang should have been selected over Arraez.
Granted, Erez leads the National League with 118 hits. you be the judge:
- Arraez: .315 with two homers, 23 RBI, 50 runs, three stolen bases, a .732 OPS and a 0.8 WAR.
- Turang: .288 with six homers, 38 RBI, 43 runs, 28 stolen bases, a .757 OPS and 3.9 WAR.
It’s a close call, but in most ways Turang is having a better season.
