Morgan Freeman is not interested in dull history events.
“I hate it. The mere thought of it. Are you going to give me the shortest month of the year? And you’re going to celebrate ‘my’ history?! This whole idea makes my teeth itch. This is not right,” he explains selection,
“my history Is American History. Beyond making money, having a good time and getting enough sleep in this world, this is something I am interested in.”
After creating the civil strife series “The Gray House” with Lori McCreary through Revelations Entertainment, this time around, Freeman has a lot on his mind.
“If you don’t know your past, if you don’t remember it, you’re bound to repeat it,” he says. During the election turmoil, this comment becomes especially poignant.
“Do you know this song? ‘There’s a season for everything.’ It’s like working in showbusiness and nobody even looks at you. Didn’t you have a project a while back? Its with you?’ That’s how life is in this industry. You have something you believe is important, but trying to convince others is the hard part.
In addition to Rod Puddle, Howard Kaplan and Leslie Greif, “The Gray House” will be executive produced by Kevin Costner, who recently brought “Horizon” to Cannes. Is it heartless that this is an excellent era for alternative “American sagas”?
“It has to be, because we’re here,” Freeman says.
The series opened the Monte-Carlo TV pageant on Friday, with future Freeman herself winning the Crystal Nymph Award. Paramount World Content Distribution is handling distribution.
Inspired by true events, the show tells the story of four Southern girls – Elizabeth Van Lew (Daisy Head), a Virginia socialite, her mother (Mary-Louise Parker), a formerly enslaved slave girl Mary Jane Richards (Amethyst Davis ) and a prostitute (Hannah James), who begins to become a secret agent for the Union. And this is just the beginning.
“It is very broad. There are a lot of people in the series, because we’re acknowledging that they were there. If you can do that, if you’re given the space to do it, well done. It didn’t just happen to one group of people,” Freeman says.
“(With a story like this) you are encouraged to dig. And if you’re going to dig, you’re going to come up with something.
McCreary agrees: “Morgan’s motto is: ‘Each project has its own time and its own team.’ I think the universe has conspired to give us this much time in our minds to take care of what we are going through and make sure the future is bright. We need to learn – as communities around the world.”
Despite some lighter moments in the story, she says, they couldn’t escape the violence.
“We are not covering up the fact that African Americans were enslaved. He was not treated as a full person. When you come out of these eight hours of watching, you’ll probably see someone who looks like Morgan or me. “You will understand their experience, the experience of their ancestors, and you will be able to relate to that.”
She observes that the show’s female characters are not just “distributing biscuits” under any circumstances.
“When I see something and it has an authentic portrayal of women, I get engaged. And sometimes I feel like the people I can connect with are in the background. The more people like Morgan and I can tell our stories – because no one else will – the more we will understand that women are everything. We are housewives, mothers and scientists. And spies!”
While researching the story, she was delighted to learn more about Mary Jane Richards.
“He had a photographic memory. He voluntarily offered himself as a gift to the ‘Grey House’ (the White House of the Confederacy) and pretended to be a slave. She was serving tea and looking at all the maps. I didn’t know there was someone who risked his entire life like this. History books should have chapters dedicated to them. I don’t know why he was ignored.”
Freeman says: “I’ll tell you why: She was a woman.”
