The future of basketball strolled through Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Wednesday night dressed in pieces from Armani, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana, among others. Huge, baby-faced athletes dressed in their best for the night of their lives: the NBA Draft.
His arrival in the draft was the result of years of hard work and dedication. On draft night, youngsters can finally show off who they’ve always wanted to be. While a handful of players hired stylists for their outfits, most chose their own outfits, from jewelry to nail polish, trying to reflect their individuality.
The NBA Draft is historically a night of surprises, from team picks and sudden changes to players’ unconventional attire. It’s a night of suits, watches, jewellery, jacket linings and discreet messages sewn into sequins. This is a chance for the rookie to make a statement before hitting the NBA hardwood for the first time.
Draft No. 1 by the Atlanta Hawks
Mr. Rissacher, 19, wore a light gray Armani seersucker suit with a white shirt and white Nike Air Force Ones. His privilege for the night? Rest.
“I picked out all the pieces of the costume and it was a fun thing,” said Mr. Resacher, who is from Lyon, France. “This was the first part of the process on NBA Draft night. I feel ready to get drafted.
Draft No. 2 by the Washington Wizards
Mr Sarr, 19, arrived in a cream double-breasted Versace suit with jeweled buttons and a matching shirt.
“I think it’s classy and I think I’m a classy guy,” he said before his trip to the red carpet. “It suits my energy for the night. I don’t really know what kind of energy cream that is, but I think it’s my energy one. I can’t wait to see where I end up. It’s the NBA Draft, it’s major.”
Draft No. 3 by Houston Rockets
Another player interested in simplicity was Mr. Shepard, 20, who wore a green suit from State & Liberty paired with a Gucci tie and brown Christian Louboutin shoes.
“This suit speaks to me,” Mr. Shepard said. “It’s quite simple. It is clear. There is nothing fancy in it. It’s a nice, simple and neat suit.”
Draft No. 4 by the San Antonio Spurs
Mr. Castle, 19, brought his last name to life with a stunning diamond chain and castle-shaped pendant. He wore a black double-breasted suit with a white speckled effect, which he said was made by his friend Julian.
“It certainly gives you a lot of confidence,” Mr Castle said. “If you walk around with a good fit you have a bit of confidence. “This is helping me a little.”
Draft No. 8 by the San Antonio Spurs (traded to Minnesota)
Mr. Dillingham, 19, wore a shiny black suit from Seventh Heaven and chrome heart Converse sneakers and glasses.
“This is the beginning of my dream,” Mr. Dillingham said. “I wasn’t even thinking about the draft today, then when the time came I was ready. I don’t think about the game, I just immerse myself in the game.”
Draft No. 5 by the Detroit Pistons
Mr. Holland, 18, asked his sister Taorani for help and she “made a lot of the decisions.” He arrived wearing a black Versace suit with sequins on the shoulders. He appeared to be immersed in diamonds. She wore a necklace with a large medallion in the shape of an atom that had special meaning to her.
“It’s an energy piece,” he said. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so I have to step up. It defines energy. Without its central part, the nucleus, none of these are functioning properly. I feel like it’s definitely me.”
Draft No. 14 by the Portland Trail Blazers (traded to Washington)
Mr Carrington, 18, known to many as Bub, wore an all black Dior suit and shirt. He pinned a green ribbon to the lapel of his suit to raise awareness of mental illness.
“You can’t do anything if you’re not in your right mind, so that’s something we always have to pay attention to,” he said.
“Staying focused on what’s going on today is definitely 50 percent of the reason I kept it simple,” he said. “The other reason is I feel like what you wear on draft day represents you in a way. I’m a very simple guy, so I just want to wear a simple black suit.

Mr. Filipowski, 20, had photos taken of himself in a Duke University jersey lining his forest green suit, which was made by Nota Bene.
“They helped make my dream come true,” Mr. Filipowski said. “Being a little more classy, but not too basic and not too flashy. This is just me. I have never expressed myself so much in fashion before. It’s kind of a first for me and I really like it. I feel very comfortable. “I don’t feel weird at all.”
Mr Filipowski is considered one of the top players available for the second round of the draft, which will be held on Thursday.
Draft No. 13 by Sacramento Kings
Mr. Carter, 22, wanted to stay true to where he was from: West Palm Beach, Florida. For this he wore a baby blue double-breasted suit without a shirt. He wore custom Cartier Chrome Hearts sunglasses and brown shoes. She said, this look was prepared by her stylist.
“It represents me,” he said. “I’m a Florida boy.”
Draft No. 24 by the New York Knicks (traded to Washington)
Mr George, 20, chose the fabrics used for his suits designed by Alba. He wore a light beige open jacket with matching boot-cut pants and an untucked cotton candy-colored shirt. Above the collar danced a necklace of opals, matching the diverse colors of his shirt. On his feet he wore Louis Vuitton sneakers. He wanted to keep it light, he said.
“I chose the clothes,” he said. “I felt good with it. I like the light texture and feel comfortable.”
Draft No. 7 by the Portland Trail Blazers
Mr. Clingan, 20, had the inside of his suit jacket decorated with family photos.
“I just wanted to have pictures of the people who helped me get to this point, the people who guided me, inside my jacket,” he told reporters on the red carpet.
Draft No. 11 by the Chicago Bulls
Mr. Bouzelis, 19, said his mother picked out an Yves Saint Laurent pinstripe suit for him.
“I feel like a normal person,” he said. “Even though I’m in YSL, it’s normal for me.”
Draft No. 6 by Charlotte Hornets
For 18-year-old Mr. Salaun, the experience has been anything but ordinary. It was his first time in New York City, he said, and he felt small among the skyscrapers. The Parisian wore a navy blue pinstripe suit, black tie and white shirt, a look he described as “business class”.
“I’m excited to hear my name called and enjoy this moment,” he said.
Draft No. 18 by Orlando Magic
For Mr da Silva, 23, who wore a red and black Alba suit to represent the German flag, it was all about the layering of the suit. The sky blue and white Bavarian flag lined the right side of his jacket, while the kelly green and yellow of the Brazilian flag lined the left side of his jacket.
“I think it’s important to know where you come from and represent that, I wouldn’t be here without it,” he said. “I think it’s important to tell people because I might not be the most vocal person about it. I’m trying to stay humble, so I don’t go out and tell everyone how great I am, but I think I can wear it. Let the suit do the talking for me.”
Draft No. 10 by the Utah Jazz
Mr Williams, 19, wore a mahogany suit, glasses and shoes, all of which belonged to Rood.
“Look good, feel good, draft good,” she said, polishing her freshly manicured nails on her jacket. “It has to be ensured that everything is in the best condition. In fact, I don’t really get a lot of mani pedis. This is a first for me. To make it look natural they got clear gel here. He did his work. After this I can get another one.”

Mr Furphy, 19, wanted to pay homage to his roots in the lining of his navy blue tuxedo. He did this by listing every Australian who has played in the NBA, including himself, even if he has not been drafted yet. (He was considered one of the top players on the board ahead of the second round of the draft.)
“Australians are very proud of Australian basketball,” he said. “Apparently there aren’t a lot of Australians there. It’s great to be recognized and appreciated that I’m part of a small group.”
Draft No. 19 by Toronto Raptors
Mr Walker, 19, wanted to send a message with his dark purple suit jacket.
“Royalty,” she said, covering her eyes with her hair.
She paired the jacket with a black shirt and black pants and black Prada shoes and glasses.
“It feels crazy to be here, I’ve been dreaming about this moment my whole life,” he said. “I looked as fresh as in my dreams.”
Draft No. 12 by the Oklahoma City Thunder
Many athletes are focused on standing out. Mr Topic, 18, wore a burgundy Hugo Boss suit, white Golden Goose sneakers and an Audemars Piguet watch.
“I’m a spontaneous person and Hugo Boss is the first suit I chose,” he said. “I want it to stand out in some way. Not black or blue, I wanted some color too. It didn’t come to the fore much.”
Draft No. 16 by the Philadelphia 76ers
Mr McCain, 20, wore a double-breasted cropped Dolce & Gabbana suit with a glittering brooch on the lapel. Her nails were painted shiny black.
He said, “I had to apply nail polish, I went casually.” “I wish I could join the team I’m going to, but I don’t have a clue.”
Draft No. 17 by the Los Angeles Lakers
Mr. Knecht, 23, wanted to keep the lining of his all-black Gucci suit a surprise until he was called on stage. This reporter managed to get a glimpse before it was shown on ESPN: It was his Tennessee Volunteers jersey.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said before donning Louis Vuitton shades. “I would go all black to keep it simple and just have a few pieces stand out a little. I’m going to do my own fashion. I will take a few pieces from here and there. But I like to keep it about myself. By Dalton.
Draft No. 21 by the New Orleans Pelicans
Mr Missy, 20, felt a little uncomfortable when his friends described him as the King of Cameroon. The lining of his cerulean blue suit jacket, designed by Alba, encouraged the nickname. Cameron’s outline was engraved on the suit’s buttons and used in a pattern in the jacket’s lining. A lion patch was also placed on the jacket.
“The lion is Cameroon’s animal,” he said. “I really like the way I look right now. The color of the suit and everything else.”
Draft No. 29 by the Utah Jazz
Mr Collier, 19, kept it simple. She wore an all-black Dolce & Gabbana suit with a single silk lapel and a glittering brooch. His series paid tribute to his brother who passed away.
He said, “Ready to rock ‘n’ roll, that’s how I feel.”
Draft No. 15 by Miami Heat
Mr Ware, 20, wore an all-black Alba suit with black Gucci loafers. She paired the look with a Rolex watch and an icy pinky ring.
“Look good, feel good, especially for a big night,” he said. “Well, I’m a calm, laid-back person. I didn’t want to go out and do much. “I was original with it.”
