Picking the best player in the NFL is easy, one layup, one gimme putt.
It’s Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes — and then everyone else. Mahomes has won two consecutive Super Bowls, a total of three, he has two regular season MVPs and three Super Bowl MVPs. He showed last season that he can win everything, even when the Chiefs were looking weak for their season.
Mahomes is on his way to becoming not only the best quarterback, but the best player of all-time.
Mahomes, who is once again the No. 1-ranked player in my Annual list of the top 100 NFL playersThe Giants have a chance to pull off a three-peat this season, which could give them four Super Bowl titles in their first seven seasons.
Tom Brady is considered the best quarterback of all time with his seven Super Bowl rings, but there would be an interesting argument about another GOAT for Mahomes. Brady never won three consecutive Super Bowls.
As far as the greatest player of all time, I always go with Jerry Rice, the greatest receiver of all time. But what makes him the best player in my mind is that there’s no argument about being the best receiver that you can make for every other position in the league.
If Mahomes continues his winning ways, he could beat both of them. At present, there is no debate over the top spot in any ranking of the league’s players.
One thing that stood out while ranking this year was how clear it is that the league is in transition. Surefire top-2 player Aaron Donald has retired. Some of the veterans who have been near the top of my rankings in recent years have not played as well and the younger players are still on the rise, moving towards the top 10, but not there yet.
This made it a challenge to crack the remaining top 25 this year. Not a star-studded top 20 in general, although that could change with the emergence of young players like CJ Stroud and other second- and third-year players.
This is my list, based on my evaluations as well as some conversations I had with some league personnel. Mostly, though, this is my list.
So get angry at me. Talk about mistakes, about what you consider too high and what you consider too low. thats what its all about.
But it is not easy. I can promise you this much. Making a top 100 list is harder than you think – except for No. 1, of course. that’s easy. This is a player who is now clearly out of the top spot of these rankings and may soon be out of the top spot of all player rankings in NFL history.
