Orioles appearances in the All-Star Game

Good morning, Camden Chatters.

If you watched the MLB All-Star Game last night, you got to see a complete performance from the Baltimore squad from start to finish.

Representatives of all five O’s took the field at Globe Life Field in Arlington last night, marking the first time since 1972 that so many Orioles have played in the All-Star Game. (Five O’s players were selected to the All-Star team in 1997, 2013 and 2016, but in each case, at least one of them never appeared in a game.)

At least two Orioles were on the field at any given time. Corbin Burns, Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson were all in the starting lineup, and reserves Anthony Sanchez and Jordan Westberg both entered the game in the fifth inning as Henderson departed.

Overall, the Crew performed well in the American League’s 5–3 victory. Despite walking Shohei Ohtani and giving up Bryce Harper’s double, Burns pitched a scoreless 19-pitch first inning and grounded out to his former Brewers teammate William Contreras’ comebacker to put runners in scoring position. . Henderson went 0-for-2 but made an excellent defensive game, Sanchez singled with two outs in the fifth to keep the AL inning alive, setting up a game-winning two-run homer by Boston’s Jaren Duran.

Westberg struck out Padres closer Robert Suarez, brother of current Oriole Albert, in his lone at-bat. As for Rutschman, the O’s catcher went 0-2 at the plate, but was seeing good rhythm pitches to players like Tarik Skubal, Garrett Crochet and Mason Miller, none of whom were traded. Could interest the Orioles at the deadline. , just saying. Adley could have had no problem making those relationships.

A good time was had by all, and now the Orioles’ All-Star representatives have had a few days off… returning to the same ballpark where the O’s opened the second half against the Rangers on Friday. The Birds will be hoping to reignite their offense after a tough 1-5 homestand to end the first half.

We know the Orioles have the talent to do some special things for the rest of the 2024 season. Their impressive squad of All-Stars can attest to that.

I don’t exactly understand the purpose of a red carpet event for the All-Star Game, but if there’s going to be one, you might as well look good. Danielle Alentuk tells us about the fashion choices of the Five O All-Stars, some of which are more successful than others.

It’s nice when the two superstars on your team are also super adorable. O’s fans are lucky to have Adley and Gunnar.

Corbin Burns has a lot going on in his life right now. It is all good.

O’s add a college left-hander when MLB draft resumes (updated and citations added) – Steve Melewski
There was some non-All-Star news this day as the O’s completed their 2024 draft with their 11th through 20th round selections, and Melewski has bios on these guys. The odds of making it to the majors are against them, but you never know when a late-round pick will suddenly appear.

Manfred confirms Orioles’ continued interest in hosting All-Star Game – School of Roach
O are showing interest in hosting the 2027 Midsummer Classic. Let’s make it happen, MLB. Thirty-six years is a long wait when there are only 30 teams in the league.

Orioles Birthday and History

Is it your birthday today? happy birthday! The only Orioles born on July 17 in history is Josh Lester (30), who played mostly for Triple-A Norfolk last season but reached the O’s for 11 games. He is currently in the Royals organization, where he has spent most of the season in Double-A.

On this date in 1991, Orioles designated hitter Sam Horn established the dubious distinction of striking out six consecutive times in a game, the first non-pitcher to accomplish the feat. His teammate Mike Flanagan dubbed the accomplishment “the Horn”. (Other hitters had previously struck out six times in a game, but not consecutively.) Nevertheless, Horn contributed a double and a walk in the Orioles’ 9–8 loss to the Royals in 15 innings.

In 1992, second-year right-hander Mike Mussina had the most impressive start of his young major league career with a one-hit shutout at Texas, with 10 strikeouts. Mussina pitched a perfect game until giving up the Rangers’ only hit, a Kevin Reimer double, in the fifth inning. Mussina earned his 10th win of the year and the O’s won 8–0.

In 1998, Rafael Palmeiro hit his 300th career home run, a two-run home run off Angels reliever Greg Cadret in the top of the eighth. The dinger led the Orioles to their ninth consecutive win, and they were still under .500 for the season. It was a strange year.

And on this date in 2022, the Orioles selected Oklahoma Prep shortstop Jackson Holliday with the #1 overall pick of the draft, their third 1-1 pick in franchise history. This selection seems to be a wise one as Holiday is at the top of every MLB prospect list, although his short major league audition earlier this year did not go as planned.
