The Florida Panthers are the first-time Stanley Cup champions, advancing to Game 7 and reestablishing their playing style to avoid a historic collapse.
After winning the first three games of the championship round, the Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 on Monday, ending a three-game losing streak.
He played a physical game, showed strong defense and made timely saves from Sergei Bobrovsky, which mirrors how he looked at the beginning of the series.
Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart scored to end the individual slump, as the Panthers won in their third trip to the final and second in two years.
The Oilers fell short in a bid to become the second NHL team to overcome a 3–0 series deficit in the Stanley Cup Finals after the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs. The Panthers equaled the 1945 Maple Leafs in winning Game 7 after blowing a 3–0 lead.
A closer look at Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals:
Edmonton gets an extra attacker.
Edmonton takes a timeout.
He’s on his back and loses his stick but the Oilers can’t take advantage.
Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl still doesn’t have a shot on goal.
He stops a one-timer from Evan Bouchard, then he and his defense work to stop Connor McDavid from close. Edmonton defeated Florida 7–2 in this period.
There are not many shots in this period so far. 2-1 Panthers.
Oilers coach Chris Knoblauch bolstered his top line.
Ivan Bouchard High Sticks Etu Luostarinen. Florida was 1 of 20 in the final, but scored immediately after the first opportunity expired. Stuart Skinner intercepts Sam Bennett nearby and the assassination is successful.
Florida needs 20 minutes for its first Stanley Cup title.
More good news for the Panthers as Sam Reinhart scores. The 57-goal scorer had scored only one goal earlier in the series. Edmonton gets some long time in the offensive zone on a few occasions, but Sergei Bobrovsky makes the save. He is looking more confident. Hits are 25-13 Florida and shots are 17-15 Panthers.
Dmitry Kulikov made a great defensive play and Sam Reinhart stole the ice. He looks passive, waits for the screen to develop and plays a shot past Stuart Skinner at 15:11. He too had been declining recently. This is his 10th goal of the playoffs. Kulikov and Carter Verhaeghe get assists.
The Oilers try some ways to keep the puck in the zone longer and rotate the puck. Sergei Bobrovsky gloved Mattias Ekholm’s shot and kept it out.
Florida penalty killer Kevin Stenlund lost his stick and the Oilers had the puck in the zone but could not convert before the game was stopped. Florida eliminated the remaining penalties with Sergei Bobrovsky blocking Evan Bouchard as time expired.
Strange punishment. Matthew Tkachuk loses his balance and slips and falls on Ivan Bouchard. He has been called out for tripping.
They did not have any goals in the last four periods. Saved by Sergei Bobrovsky.
Score equal 1-1. The Panthers should like the way he plays.
The Panthers came out playing their brand of hockey, defeating Edmonton 18-7. Florida’s Carter Verhaeghe scored for the first time since Game 1, but Edmonton’s Mattias Janmark responded with a breakaway goal a little more than two minutes later. Florida was pressing toward the end of the period. Shots on goal are 8-6 Florida. No shot for Connor McDavid.
Florida’s Matthew Tkachuk gets the puck down, but his shot goes wide as he tries to lift the shot over Stuart Skinner.
They lead 17-7 hitting five minutes into the first period.
Still 1-1. His shot was taken at a speed of 90 miles per hour.
Edmonton’s Mattias Janmark took a pass from Cody Ceci and scored on a breakaway at 6:44. He shoots high, where Sergei Bobrovsky is considered more vulnerable. The Oilers’ third line now has five goals in four games. Another odd man rush hurt the Panthers.
The Panthers didn’t get much going on the power play, but soon after, Ivan Rodriguez put a shot near the net and Carter Verhaeghe tipped it in at 4:27. This is significant because he was slipping and the team that scored first has won the last eight Stanley Cup Finals Game 7s.
Edmonton’s Warren Foegele high sticks Brandon Montour. The Panthers’ power play is 1-for-19 in this series.
winner take all. The first goal will be important.
Oilers coach Chris Knoblauch has started his third line in the last three games and has allowed four goals. Paul Morrissey answers from his third line. This gives them the option to put Alexander Barkov out against Connor McDavid.

Panthers: Better to get off to a good start, especially when the home crowd is behind them. They have trailed by at least 2-0 in each of the last three matches. In Game 6, he only had two shots on goal in the first period.
Oilers: more of the same. Quick to counter the Panthers’ foreboding passes up the ice. Too much movement in the crowd. Continue your special teams dominance.

Panthers’ Sergei Bobrovsky (15-8, 2.38 goals-against average, .903 save percentage) vs. Oilers’ Stuart Skinner (14-8, 2.46, .901)
Panthers forward Kyle Okposo is coming in for Nick Cousins. Vladimir Tarasenko is headed to the top power-play unit, going 1 of 19 in the final. Tarasenko previously played in the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 with the Blues.
Connor McDavid has 11 points in the Finals, leaving him two points shy of Wayne Gretzky’s 1988 record. He has already passed Gretzky’s record with 34 assists in the postseason. McDavid’s 42 playoff points rank him fourth all-time behind Gretzky (47, 1985), Mario Lemieux (44, 1991) and Gretzky (43, 1988).
It is believed that McDavid could win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, regardless of who wins Game 7.
Home teams are 12–5, but the road team has won the last three: the 2019 Blues, 2011 Bruins and 2009 Penguins.

The 2024 Oilers are the third NHL team. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs did this against the Detroit Red Wings and won Game 7. The 1945 Red Wings did this against the Maple Leafs and lost Game 7.
