Pay for life with Narah: ‘I have less than $2 saved per year since I was younger’

This is pay life! The ABC’s unused column where we ask Australians the cash questions we don’t like to discuss. We struggle to demystify personal finance and normalize the conversation about what we earn and the way we set it aside – or spend it.

Narah is an actor, singer, radio presenter and young Australian from Tasmania. She previously starred in the major Australian television series Deadlock, and has been living in London for the past year studying at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. She was also the new winner of the 2024 National NAIDOC Creative Skills Award.

For Pay Life, she discusses the truth about being an Australian scholar living out of the country, why she’s happy to spend money on a fancy dinner, and why she doesn’t want to know how much of her money will go to subscriptions. .

How would you describe your monetary situation at this time?

As an artist it’s always changing. I disagree that two days are the same for what I do for work, which means wrong weeks between pay days are the same.

Since my work is so inconsistent, there may be some great gigs, but then there are also a lot of waiting years and auditions. It has stores at all locations. I have recently completed 10 months as a student on an excellent scholarship, which was really amazing. This is an amount of cash in Australian dollars, although obviously, now that I’m living in London, it’s a fraction of that. For every dollar, that’s basically 50 pence, as the cost of the housing disaster in London is absolutely extreme.

Therefore there is a shortage of cash. I’ve been really good at budgeting and cutting out some of the bad stuff and some of the problems aren’t there at all. I have recently been awarded my final scholarship fee, so I am close to reaching the £100 mark until my final program in a few weeks.

How was cash talked about in your house?

Money really used to be a secret communication. I didn’t grow up in a crowd of affluent people, but we never went out of it. Dad worked really hard, and Mom did her best to help Dad with all his work. Dad was self-employed and there was one year when he was off sick for a few months so we really felt that way. Still, money was a hidden topic, and it really taught me to avoid opportunities as a young person.

What is your fault for wasteful spending?

I really like pleasant dinners. I actually prefer the specialty year to the spectacular special meal. I believe that mine can be spent on a pleasant dinner and a pleasant bottle of wine. Eating out for $5 or $500 is beneficial, but I believe it is undoubtedly a waste because you will always get financial savings on food. I prepare a lot of meals in London, especially as a student – ​​but I really enjoy spending special years with excellent publics and excellent food.

Have you ever kept a secret about cash?

I was on a field inspection once as a teenager where the man had recently died. They usually had this bag of ancient cash hidden away, so I grabbed one on a whim. It stayed with me for a few months, and this place was around the corner from my house and I would think about walking to school once, doing a lap, going back home and throwing the coin back.

I don’t know where it landed, just somewhere in the house. I felt guilty, I couldn’t do it anymore!

How much did the last loaf of bread you buy cost?

My last loaf of bread would have been about £3 ($5). It used to be a late night shop, so it wasn’t exactly fresh bread either. However I really like investing in good quality bread, butter and milk. Staple!

Money or card?

Look, there’s a goal for everyone, but I have to be honest, I can’t remember the last year I had money.

How many reserved accounts will you have? How do you organize your cash?

This is really ridiculous because it is unbalanced on life. I have accounts in several other banks which is amazing, but that also covers my daily expenses, including my fines and my home loan. Someone else had my area saved for an entire year and I couldn’t contact him, so I didn’t have his password (that’s how I was able to save my area cabinet).

I have also been given my global reserve account but I want to open another account as I will soon be a sound operating actor in London and want it to get commission.

What’s the biggest lie you tell yourself about cash?

I believe my biggest thing is membership. I’m like, “Oh, it’s only £6 ($11), it’ll be fine”. However, that leaves me with countless subscriptions on my account that I don’t really need or aren’t worth. The subscription layout we have these days – constantly paying cash for something on demand – is a really hard thing to do.

I have subscriptions to apps and it would be a little scary if I wanted to add them. Although I admit I’d really like to look a little more into replication to see exactly what I need out of these.

What is your biggest financial success?

There is no doubt that I am buying my first acreage. It was really impressive to me, I believe, to realize that not touching those savings in a few years really got me somewhere.

I was always looking for that money to buy a place, and my father always said the first thing to do with my savings was to buy a place. This was a possibility that undoubtedly came to me in my year earlier than I anticipated. Because buying a home in your 20s is – let’s face it – almost impossible.

But keep that $2 per generation safe from a soft opportunity – I’ve never been banned from doing so. And when I earned a little extra I would invest more. I bought a place from a small tribal family in Kimberley, so it’s undoubtedly a renovator’s dream! And my mom and dad are living there these days, which is really funny because they’re my tenants now. I am really pleased with it.

If there was one thing an 18-year-old needed to know about cash, what wouldn’t it be?

You do not desire a continuous process to achieve success. I believe a big part of learning to be an artist was learning to let go of the mindset of constantly working. I grew up in a global best-optic public that featured traditional jobs… I don’t think we see large numbers of art workers making money for themselves.

It’s extremely challenging to break into, don’t think of me as being inappropriate. However I believe I could tell myself at 18 that I wanted to allow myself to live in the democracy of that lifestyle and understand that I didn’t want to work full time jobs all the time. ,

I believe you will get it when you really need it. I’ve really proven to myself over the years that I will be able to pursue painting within the arts and there are countless other ways to earn a living, whether it’s just a gig for a few hours on a Friday evening or not. Theater.
