Needham, Pyle., July 9, 2024 – The traditional PC market expanded for the second quarter after seven consecutive quarters of decline. International shipments reached 64.9 million gadgets in the second quarter of 2024 (2Q24), representing an increase of 3.0% year-on-year, in line with early results from Global Information Company (IDC) International Quarterly Private Computing Software Tracker. The overall market benefited from favorable comparisons to 2023, while susceptible markets in China persisted for re-stocking. Excluding China, global shipments increased by more than 5% over 12 months.

“Make no mistake, the PC market, like other technology markets, will face near-term challenges due to maturity and headwinds,” said Ryan Reith, team vice president of IDC’s International Software Trackers. “However, with two consecutive quarters of growth, plenty of market hype around AI PCs, and a less sexy but arguably more important commercial refresh cycle, it looks like the PC market needs the buzz clearly around AI. But there are plenty of non-AI PC purchases showing signs of positivity in this mature market.”

In recent months, many trade gamers have formulated their initial strategy for AI PC, mainly focusing on the expansion aspect and industrial market potential. While IDC believes the industrial market holds the biggest temporary advantage for AI in the PC industry, the consumer story is not yet fully understood. The onus is on Apple to implement that message with a product launch expected later this year, but it certainly shouldn’t be overlooked that Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD are all working together for both consumer and business AI PCs. Likely to make noise.

“Outside of the business refresh cycle, promotional activity from consumer-oriented brands and channels has helped strengthen the segment,” said Jitesh Ubrani, analysis supervisor for IDC’s International Sales Software Trackers. “The market has also surpassed last year’s lows due to excess inventory, reflecting an increase in the average selling price due to richer configurations and lower discounts.”
