Several baseball players with Illinois connections have been selected in Major League Baseball’s 2024 amateur draft.

Here’s a look at which teams drafted him throughout the 20 rounds of the draft and where he was selected relative to his predraft MLB Pipeline Top 250 ranking.

No. 26: Ben Hayes (Charleston/Alabama) by New York Yankees

A right-handed pitcher from downstate Charleston, Hayes raised his MLB Pipeline projection to No. 44 to become a first-round pick. In three seasons at Alabama, his record as a starter was 12–6. The slot value for this pick, which indicates MLB’s predetermined signing bonus estimate, is $3.33 million.

No. 35: J.D. Dix (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) by Arizona Diamondbacks.

Notable for attending Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell’s alma mater in Wisconsin, Dix improved his MLB Pipeline projection to No. 75. Dix, a shortstop, is committed to Wake Forest, which had three players selected in the top 10 on Sunday.

No. 55: Ryan Sloan (York) by Seattle Mariners.

Sloan, a right-handed pitcher, was projected at No. 19 on the MLB Pipeline list. Although he lost in the second round, this may reflect the frequent and chaotic conversations surrounding the draft rather than any concerns or performance issues. No. 66: Tyler Bell (Lincoln-Way East) by Tampa Bay Rays.

Bell, a defense-first shortstop, was projected at No. 81 by MLB Pipeline. The switch hitter has committed to Kentucky and must choose whether to sign with the Rays or go to college. The slot value for this Competitive Balance Round B pick is $1.26 million.

No. 108: Jackson Kent (Lake Park/Arizona) by Washington Nationals.

Kent, a left-handed pitcher, made the All-Pac-12 team last season and slightly boosted his status with his No. 136 MLB Pipeline projection. As a fourth-round pick, the slot for No. 108 is worth $676,000.

No. 140: Sam Antonacci (Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin/Heartland CC/Coastal Carolina) by Chicago White Sox

Bagwell is a 6-4, 230-pound right-handed pitcher from downstate Collinsville who has sent four players to the major leagues. Bagwell has a college commitment to Missouri.

No. 250: Brandon Tuninck (Newman Central Catholic) by Los Angeles Dodgers.

Tunnink is a left-handed hitting outfielder who played at Newman in Sterling, Illinois. He committed to Notre Dame in 2022, but participated in June’s MLB Draft Combine, indicating he may choose to sign with the Dodgers.

No. 268: Zane Zielinski (Lake View/Northeast CC/UIC) by San Francisco Giants

Zielinski, a 6-3 middle infielder, was an All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as a senior at UIC.

No. 275: Griffin Tobias (Lake Central (Ind.)) by Milwaukee Brewers

Griffin, a right-handed pitcher, was the Post-Tribune Baseball Player of the Year and helped his team to the Indiana Class 4A championship.

No. 279: Zack Crowder (Plainfield East/Illinois) by Baltimore Orioles

Crowder is a 6-4, 225-pound right-handed pitcher who had a career 6.23 ERA in 182 innings over four seasons at Illinois.

No. 283: Ryan Smith (Nazareth/UIC) by Houston Astros.

Smith is a 21-year-old right-handed pitcher from Westchester who has seen action in two seasons at UIC.

No. 305: Ethan Dorchis (Cary-Grove) by Milwaukee Brewers

No. 605: Henry Brummell (Pontiac Township) by the Milwaukee Brewers

Brummell is a 6-4, 202-pound, right-handed pitcher who has committed to Indiana.
