Celebrity chef Justin Sutherland was charged after his arrest Monday with threatening to blow up his girlfriend in St. Paul and then crashing into her with a gun.
Sutherland, 39, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with criminal warning of violence in connection with the incident that occurred Friday night at the 800 Forbidden Block of Entrance Street, just after 8 p.m., when police responded to a warrant. The boy with the gun.
The woman told police Sutherland pointed a gun at her and swore he would blow her up, choked her and struck her in the chest with the weapon, the criminal complaint says. Fearing his moment, he spread his palms and pleaded not to be shot, having to endure criticism.
Officers arrested Sutherland during a second police interview that night in connection with a record of domestic violence. After being jailed, the jail complaint said, Sutherland denied the allegations.
Sutherland appeared in court on Monday morning and was freed on personal recognizance and ordered to surrender any weapons he possessed to police within 24 hours. He is scheduled to appear in court again on August 16.
His legal professional, John Daly, told the Big Name Tribune that the criticism “is full of lies. He never physically attacked anyone, never pointed a gun at anyone and never strangled anyone. … Mr. Sutherland is a A non-violent, warm-hearted member of the community.”
Sutherland was the undrafted executive chef for Good Looking Hog, a Southern-style restaurant that opened in 2016 in St. Paul. He has severed ties with the eatery, but has since opened a breakfast sandwich store, Bulky E’s. Lavish Street in St. Paul.
He was also planning with his father, Kerry Sutherland, to look at an untouched restaurant in the former area of the Yellowish Thyme Café in the St. Paul Rondo community. Most of the time he planned the remarkable Pearl and the Thief on the lawn of the spectacular 22-story O2 tower in Minneapolis’s Mill District.

A caller to 911 reported shortly after 8 p.m. that a man, known at the time as Sutherland, was entering the back door of a building with a gun and a girl with her palms up .
Around the same month, a second 911 caller said she was on FaceTime with her sister, who said her boyfriend was trying to kill her. The caller can hear Sutherland saying, “I wish you were dead right now.” The caller said Sutherland had his palms on his sister’s neck. The caller said he also snatched his sister’s phone and made her sick.
Police arrived and saw Sutherland walking behind Vikas. An officer ordered him to stand away and place his palms on his head. “‘I called 911, and you’re trying to arrest me?’ “You should kill me (expletive),” he was quoted as shouting. ,
Sutherland followed the officer’s instructions during the arrest but made a racially derogatory comment at the officer.
Another man came out of the building and told police that he and Sutherland were longtime friends. He told police that Sutherland had moved into the building the day before and was planning to check out a café there. In between, the friend said, Sutherland lived in an apartment there.
Sutherland messaged her that month and mentioned that he and his girlfriend were fighting. The friend said he was sick of the backup peace problems on the way.
The “visibly shaking and crying” girlfriend told police that she and Sutherland had been a couple for two years, often arguing about telling him they were not going to a song contest.
He also said that he was trying to get over the problems he was facing due to neighbors behaving racistly towards him. Then he mentioned his sister. She said he squeezed her neck with both hands and said, “‘I want you to die.’ ,
She mentioned that she ran to a neighbor’s house to use the telephone, and Sutherland walked out of the building with a handgun and instructed her that if she returned he would blast her. As she approached him, the girlfriend endured, Sutherland pointed the gun at her and stabbed her in the chest with the weapon. She said he posted his palms and said, “‘Don’t shoot me.’ ,
In a follow-up interview with police, the girl mentioned that Sutherland had warned her, “‘Take two more steps. I dare you.’ ,
He said his friend immediately arrived and disarmed Sutherland, who yelled at him that he wanted to kill him. He told police about the gun and said he had other guns in the home.
A search of the residence by police found a gun case on a mattress with two handguns inside. One of them appeared to have blood on it. When police arrived, Sutherland’s palms were covered in blood. Officers also located 8 alternative weapons and ammunition in the home.
She said Sutherland had physically and verbally abused her during that era, including destroying the windshield of her car two days earlier.
Police had been at the residence about 90 minutes earlier when the female friend called 911 and said Sutherland strangled her and attempted to drag her out of the apartment. She refused to give his name and continued to disconnect from 911. The officers told him, and he said everything was fine. Negative arrest was done by first name.
