Shannen Doherty, an actress who starred in the popular hit series “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed” and documented her nine-year struggle with breast cancer, has died, according to her longtime publicist.

She was once 53 years old.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after battling the disease for several years, Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement to CNN.

“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones, as well as her dog, Bowie. The family is asking for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace,” his comment continued.

Doherty developed a loyal fan base with the roles of Heather Duke in the iconic 1989 vintage film “Heathers”, and the roles of Brenda Walsh in the hit form “Beverly Hills, 90210” from 1990 to 1994 and its next spin-off “90210” . Prue Halliwell in “Charmed” from 1998 to 2001.

Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, recovering from it two years later. In 2020, Doherty announced that the cancer had returned, had spread and was at level 4.

He shared the inside track in June 2023 that his cancer had spread to his brain.

Doherty is opening up about her cancer on her podcast, “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty.” The latest episode streamed on July 8.

Doherty, who was vocal about living with cancer before she knew it was incurable, maintained that mindset when discussing her plans for the motion.

“I think I’m in the mindset now that I have to make as much money as possible over the next two years, put it in the bank, put it in my investment space, make it so that A, I don’t have to do that. Doherty left the show in season four following reports of on-set tension between herself and some of her castmates.

She returned to the big screen in 1994’s “Almost Dead” and 1995’s “Mallrats.”

Three years later, Doherty reunited with costars Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs to form Spelling’s “Charmed”, in which they starred as three sisters who were witches.

She left her role as Prue Halliwell on that screen after three years and began working again on several films, including “The Rendering” in 2002 and “View of Terror” in 2003.

In 2008, Doherty reprized the role of Brenda in the CW reboot “90210” for seven episodes.

He then played himself in the meta-style reboot “BH90210” in 2019, the same year he starred as a stranded motorist in The CW’s “Riverdale”, starring Perry. He died at the age of 52 after suffering a stroke in March 2019.

Doherty’s co-stars and friends paid tribute to her on Sunday.

Gabrielle Carteris, who starred with Doherty on “90210,” wrote on Instagram: “So little – so sad. May you tear up Shannon. I know Luke is there with open arms to love you.” ‘

Jason Priestley, who played Brandon Walsh on the teen drama, wrote that he was “shocked and saddened” by Doherty’s passing.

“She was a force of nature and I will miss her,” he wrote on Instagram. “Sending love and light to his family during this dark time.”

“90210” alum Brian Austin Green wrote in the Stories category of his verified Instagram account that he would pass on Doherty “as much as I know how to do right now.”

Doherty’s “Charmed” costar Rose McGowan wrote on Instagram that her good friend “had the heart of a lion.”

“Passion for craft is often misconstrued as trouble. Shannon was passionate,” he wrote.

McGowan said she met Doherty in the 90s and later had the opportunity to get to know him better, calling the friendship “a beautiful gift”.

“Our lives were intertwined in a unique way. We laughed at the dark forces that wanted us to hate each other, instead we chose love and respect,” he wrote. “A soft-hearted scoundrel, as before. A force of energy that will live forever in hearts.”
