Telephone companies are constantly striving for the spotlight, and remarkable designs remain at the center of that quest. OnePlus, which has toyed with unusual but interesting ideas in the past, is now reviving the utility of steel in telephone design. The OnePlus Nord 4 is launching on July 16, and the company has already started teasing its upcoming shades.
We already gave you a preview of the closest OnePlus Nord 4 with steel, booking our final overview until the upcoming announcement. However, before the setup, I spoke with OnePlus President and COO Kinder Liu about the exciting aspects of the untested design and its fidelity to the company’s claimed “best flow” ever on its devices.
First let’s talk about that design

Our conversation started with the design, which evokes a heavy dose of nostalgia. Steel bodied telephones were all the rage in the late 2010s, but were eventually phased out in favor of glass or plastic bodies, leaving the expectations of fans like me very low.
I inquired about what resulted in the number of content. Liu directed me to return to steel, I was primarily inspired by its four qualities, especially “durability, beauty, durability and strength.” Obviously, steel telephones do not easily succumb to drops of frost and are difficult to split. The wonderful thing about a beautiful metal surface is also subjective – and rightly lies in the visibility of the beholder – they are undoubtedly more resistant to the effects of age, such as micro scratches, which tend to form on glass phones after frequent use. Are made.
Steel also improves performance, with the outer frame acting as an effective surface to dissipate heat generated during tasks such as gaming. Beyond that your phone will feel hot when you use it, it will also cool down faster than most glass back phones. By fighting heat from being trapped throughout the frame, it will also prevent damage to internal parts during prolonged use.
So, what resulted in the ouster of steel telephones and the dominance of glass as the most preferred material for top class telephones? I requested Liu, who replied, “Metal phones were very popular before 5G networks. But as 5G gained popularity, smartphones needed more antennas. Compared to only four antennas in the OnePlus 3T, the OnePlus 12 has as many as 13.

The large selection of antennas results in difficult situations with additional adjustments inside the frame. Meanwhile, metal bodies would interfere with the mixed signals from these antennas, and that’s why companies started choosing glass or plastic, as metal’s usefulness remained limited to the side rails.
This made me wonder what was changing now and how OnePlus was able to reach a metal build without affecting the 5G indicators. Liu filled me in on the refurbished antennas which are now 50% smaller than before. More importantly, OnePlus redesigned the motherboard and strategically positioned those antennas so the Nord 4’s frame doesn’t hinder cell signals. Additionally, the phone has plastic inserts in the parks like base of the back to strengthen the signal strength.

But apart from ensuring signal strength, OnePlus has also created a metal design with subtle ridges that look like bulges, but lead to a pristine surface. This is something that glass has to contend with, even on the most high-end telephones and despite the most powerful Gorilla Glass – or similarly strong – protective layers.
An unused report for OnePlus Tool Update

However the OnePlus Nord 4 is more than ready for a forever design change. The device functions even in very powerful conditions. In fact, it comes with what OnePlus promises is the “longest software support package ever.”
Liu confirmed that the OnePlus Nord 4 will get 4 years of Android updates, which will launch with Android 14 and go up to Android 18 (or similar). Additionally, OnePlus will provide two additional years of tool support for critical feature updates, including security patches. This brings the total support to 6 years, which is the longest lifetime of any OnePlus phone. This is a step up from the OnePlus Nord 3, which promised 3 years of Android updates and a backup year of security updates.
This is in line with other mid-range devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy A55, which also promises five years of overall tool support along with four Android updates. The only midrange Android phone to reach the peak is the Google Pixel 8a, for which Google reserves a seven-year update window.
Trying to make powerful claims from deep again

I asked if alternative OnePlus phones, especially previously launched flagships such as the OnePlus 12, would get the same treatment. Sadly, I didn’t get any concrete response.
In turn, our conversation focused on Liu reiterating that it is no longer about making bold promises in a selection of years to receive updates by telephone. I was instructed that the telephone should “stay sharp and smooth for a long time, and its battery should also last a long time.”
To make sure it’s going according to plan, OnePlus has engaged German testing company TÜV SÜD to run a 72-month flow test, which the company claims it has passed. This test simulates intensive and difficult tests, copying dozens of gigabytes of utility information and deleting them in rapid succession to keep the Store from bothering you, installing and removing hundreds of apps, and launching various apps. Is and finalizes – all current time settings.
The test certifies that the OnePlus Nord 4 will be as fluent after 72 months (six years) of use as it was in the first hour. Additionally, the battery has been charged and drained repeatedly to ensure longevity. OnePlus found that the battery remained top notch despite 1,600 charging cycles.
Those pledges should create a sense of detachment among consumers. At the end of our conversation, Liu remarked that a telephone without these pledges is “like a strong house without a strong foundation.” It looks good on the surface, but you don’t really want to live with it.”
