Trek has killed off the Mondeo with the eighth-generation Madone, combining its lightweight hiking motorcycle and dedicated aero platform with what it claims is an “earth-shattering” do-it-all highway race motorcycle.

“A blend of its fastest road race bike”, the untested Madone is considered to be as bright as the outgoing seventh-generation Madone, with a similar Aero and Honda feel.

Trek has introduced its untested top-tier OCLV 900 layup with the untested Madone. Making value out of unused production strategies, it is said to be 20 percent more powerful and lighter than the existing 800 series layout. This and an unused one-piece fork save a claimed 320 grams, unlike the seventh-generation Madone.

The Emonda name will continue to exist as the Emonda ALR alloy race motorcycle, although it will not expand into Trek’s top-tier highway motorcycle line-up.

Trek upgraded a set of tube shapes for the untested Madone, ditching its long-standing Kammtail shapes in preference to what it calls Complete Device Foil.

Compared to the outgoing Madone, many of the tubes are wider and squatter. Trek says these are more structurally eco-friendly (lighter) than Camtel tubes.

Trek says the motorcycle is designed to optimize airflow over the entire motorcycle and rider, rather than optimizing individual components of the motorcycle.

Dimensions—XS and S motorcycles feature thinner tubes than better sized ones. Trek says this reduces weight on smaller motorcycles and maintains consistent aero efficiency throughout the range.

Trek has also developed unused aero bottles and cages for the Madone.

Trek claims these save 3.7 watts at 45km/h versus a normal circular bottle of the same capacity, and in any case are faster than running waste bottles. The cages are painted from standard spherical bottles.

The unused bottles are kept with SLR level motorcycles and available in the aftermarket.

Compared to the previous generation Madone with spherical bottles and largely the same size, the unpowered Madone with the aero bottles is said to be 0.1 watt faster at 35.4 km/h – or, in other words, almost identical.

As is to be expected, much more is evident when comparing the untested Madone to the Honda, with the same hastily claimed 11.3-watts preserved.

unused layup leads to weight loss

Trek’s unused 900 OCLV layup generation, as worn on SLR level motorcycles, utilizes an inflatable mandrel throughout production – the method around which the body is placed.

It improves compaction, draws out abundant resin and reduces wrinkles in tubes.

Using this untested production method, a painted SLR-level length M/L body is estimated to weigh 796 grams and the fork 350 grams.

This conserves a claimed 320 grams, unlike the seventh-generation Madone, although is marginally heavier than the top-tier OCLV 800 Amanda SLR body at the same length (698 grams claimed).

Evaluating the entire build equipped with homogeneous Pink AXS, the unused Madone SLR 9 AXS is estimated to weigh 7.00 kg and the outgoing Monda SLR 9 AXS is estimated to weigh 6.75 kg.

The SL-level Madone uses Trek’s 500 OCLV layup. It has been claimed that its body weight is 1,054 grams and fork weight is 363 grams.

The highest-spec SLR motorcycles feature the additional detail of the unused one-piece aero RSL cockpit, while the SL has a traditional two-piece cockpit.

The SL can also be had with a mechanical drivetrain.

IsoFlow remains

Introduced in the seventh generation Madone, Trek has retained its unique Isoflow components for the motorcycle.

This hollow within the seat tube allows the seat mast to flex and is said to increase aero efficiency.

The second incarnation of the IsoFlow has been relatively slimmed down and the aerodynamic shape is softer to reduce weight and increase efficiency.

This, along with the unused layup strategy – which enabled Trek to remove the foam core worn in the IsoFlow’s unedited incarnation – is said to tighten vertical compliance by a consistent 80 percent.

Decreased length dimension covers additional passengers

Trek says that despite the support for length options, the untested Madone will accommodate a wide range of riders. – trek

The Madon length dimension has been reduced from size 8 to size 6. Trek says this unused dimension covers a very wide spectrum of rider heights with very little overlap between sizes.

Trek has also eliminated numerical sizing in preference to T-shirt-style sizing.

Sizes 54 and 52 cm were mixed into unused size-M motorcycles. The former 62 cm motorcycle has now been capped through to a size-XL motorcycle, which features a taller seat mast.

At the other end, improved seat mast adjustability expands the dimensions for smaller riders, according to Trek.

In the past, Trek has offered compatibility options for its motorcycles in H1 (Professional/Competition) and H2 (Reassurance/Durability).

It bridged this gap with the 2021 Trekking Honda, and introduced the compatibility of its all-rounder H1.5.

With the unused Madone, Trek has dropped its ‘H’ naming conventions altogether, now describing its all-rounder geometry as ‘Road Race’.

The geometry of the 7th and 8th generation Madones is homogeneous – the reach in maximum sizes is relatively lower and the reach is higher, but only by a few millimeters in both cases.

A slow cockpit?

Trek says its updated RSL Aero Cockpit is much less aerodynamic than the outgoing seventh-generation Madone Cockpit. On the other hand, the way it attaches to the rider’s legs makes it an additional aero component overall.

The cockpit is 41 cm wide at the hood, extending 44 cm within the drops.

While this won’t be based on gross sales share, Trek says almost all orders for the Madone SLR are made through its Undertaking One program.

This trades in full customization options, including paint, groupset selection and, critically, tactile issues.

Trek says this avoids the routine pitfalls of one-piece cockpits that almost all customers assume fit their cockpits.

UDH, general headset part and T47

Trek has introduced the unused common headset spacer and height protection components shared around the new Madone Dimension and “future Trek road bikes”. Exactly which setup you choose will depend on your stem or one-piece cockpit:

  • RCS Race: RSL Aero Bar/Stem (integrated with Madone SLR Gen 8)
  • RCS Professional: RCS Professional Blender Stem (integrated with Madone SL Gen 8)
  • RCS General: Traditional Round Stem

The untested Madone can also be built around SRAM’s UDH components, opening up compatibility for UDH-specific 1x models of Logo’s top-spec highway motorcycle groupset.

After all, there is no substitute for the T47 base bracket, as worn by several generations of Trek’s highway motorcycles.
