Kansas City, MO. – The US men’s national team was eliminated from the 2024 Copa America here on Monday after losing an all-out battle.

This equaled Group C’s most powerful punter, Uruguay. For an hour, it neutralized one of the most impressive Copa contenders ever. It endured painful physical conflicts. Within moments she looked capable of winning.

However, it needed to score.

Over 90 tense and frantic minutes at Arrowhead Stadium, it never happened.

Instead, they conceded a controversial goal to Uruguay’s Mathias Oliveira in the second half – which appeared to be offside, but was confirmed by a video review – and lost 1–0.

Playing together, Panama defeated Bolivia 3–1, leaving the Americans in third place and eliminated.

At the final whistle, some players fell to the ground; Others bent at the waist; Others stood there defeated and stunned.

However, in the end, it was his last match that cost him. They arrived in Kansas City bruised and battered, beaten by Panama and pushed to the brink in Group C. A week ago, it seemed so simple; Suddenly, failure was lurking in the depths of Arrowhead, ready to strike if the U.S. couldn’t defeat Uruguay, the flyweight giant of the game.

“We have to go out and play the best game of our lives,” Christian Pulisic said Thursday.

On the eve of the Uruguayan War, he amended that statement; This was exaggerated; “Maybe I was a little emotional,” he said. But the size and stakes of the task were clear. “We have to play a really strong game,” Pulisic said.

Thirty hours later, he tried.

In some ways, they did.

But Uruguay was strong. uruguay Is Strong. Uruguay was the team that surged ahead in the second half of Monday’s game and forced the United States to fall behind. Uruguay were the team less troubled by physicality.

The first half was vigorous and sometimes loose. The crunching tackle upset many players. Two – Uruguayan Maxi Araujo and American striker Folarin Balogun – left with injuries after horror collisions.

It was also full of incomplete refereeing. On one occasion, official Kevin Ortega whistled for a foul on American defender Chris Richards, and threw a yellow card – then waved him off to allow Uruguay to take advantage. The resulting chance almost yielded an early goal, but Tim Ream tried to hit back.

In general, the US matched Uruguay’s intensity – which was no easy feat. The Americans were better in the opening 30 minutes, a small victory in itself given the strength of Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay team.

But, as has often been the case under head coach Greg Berhalter, they couldn’t score. They scored only 0.3 expected goals against Uruguay’s 1.3.

Pulisic said after the game, “I mean, we started well and brought a lot of energy, but at the end of the day, there wasn’t enough quality. I felt like we gave everything, but we just couldn’t do it.” ” Solutions to Scoring.”

In another match of Group C, Panama scored a goal in the 22nd minute against Bolivia, after which America had to win. Some? quality; It had to be something.

For a few minutes of the second half, Bolivia gave the USMNT some life. The Bolivians equalized against Panama. If both games had ended in a tie, the United States would have advanced to the knockout rounds based on goal difference.

But less than a minute after Bolivia’s goal was confirmed by video review, the United States conceded a set piece.

Later, Panama went ahead by scoring the second goal and then the third.

Uruguay maintained control, sealing their 1–0 win and sending the American players to their locker rooms to bow out of the Copa America in failure.

They moved on, dejected and disappointed, earlier than anyone expected. Over the past weeks many people were asked about expectations and benchmarks for the Copa; There were outside assumptions that making the quarterfinals would be acceptable and the semi-finals would be successful, but some players went even further: Why not try to win it?

It seems that some people were also considering the group-stage flop. This was far below the USMNT’s clearly inflated sense of self. And that would obviously be a huge disappointment.

But it happened and now all eyes will be on what happens next. They will turn to U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker and Berhalter. Most fans and pundits now seem to agree that Needed To remove. Will he be there? If yes, who will replace him? And if not, how will he and the USMNT respond?

Most of the under-23 team will leave for the Paris Olympics later this month. But for the USMNT as a whole, the next 18 months will be relatively barren. There will be dull, low-profile friendships. There will be exhausting regional competitions.

This Copa America fresco All of them will hang on, because this was the tournament that was supposed to elevate the program; This was its first step towards the 2026 World Cup in North America. Instead, the US will enter 2026 with almost zero evidence that it can join and compete with international football’s elite.
