Well-used jokes aside, international coverage of the actual debate used to be scary

If anyone was expecting a breakdown of how the two main presidential candidates view the most important international coverage issues of our time, the evening the conversation ended was a devastating disappointment.

If one’s expectations were so low that one could think of nothing but second-hand embarrassment from the exchange that ended the evening, the latter probably wouldn’t amount to much.

On Ukraine and Israel, President Biden and former President Trump bickered, confused and incensed their way through an 11-minute foreign policy discussion, turning away from the topics only in fleeting moments of incoherence during the time on point.

For Trump, these were surface-level attacks on how, in his view, Biden’s position and lack of leadership in the “shameful” Afghanistan withdrawal in September 2021 led Putin to attack Ukraine and Hamas to attack Israel ( He repeated this in various examples during the 90-minute debate, which took the playing field in Atlanta and without a live target audience).

Biden hit back, saying Trump openly encouraged Putin to invade in February 2022 and reiterated that if not stopped, the Russian president would spread violence across Europe to re-establish the “Soviet Empire.” As far as Israel is concerned, he claimed the White Space Armistice Agreement that no one, neither Hamas nor Israel, has any secret capability to be specifically involved, for weeks.

Eli Clifton of the Quincy Institute quipped, “None of the candidates put forward a vision for how the United States can engage positively with the world in a way that promotes American interests and tackles climate change, nuclear proliferation, and To address the shared existential threats posed by rising great power tensions.” ,

This is an underestimate. With the enormous gravity of two major wars simultaneously raging on this planet, two men competing for the role of commander in leadership appeared with the intention of talking about these problems only within the narrow circle of their choice. Trump was relatively more detailed – citing the cost of blood and investment and a desire to end, in particular, the war in Ukraine, blaming Europe for what he called freeloading. However, his claim to be able to end the war in Ukraine, while still the President-elect, was not supported by anything but his sheer insistence that it could happen.

At the end of the debate when Trump was saying that Biden would “push us into World War III,” the audience was probably too dull to react.
