His father, a veterinarian from Ogmore-by-Sea in Bridgend, went to work there and met Mr Gething’s mother, a poultry farmer.

Two years later they moved to Britain and Mr Gething’s father got a job near Abergavenny in Monmouthshire.

Then, the nearest he arrived was with his sluggish population, which was taken back to trade. They crossed the border to England and the younger Vaughan spent his early years in Dorset.

Mr Gething returned to Wales as a student to study at Aberystwyth College, where he lived in a hall of residence, Pantycelyn, where the Welsh language was predominantly spoken.

“He knew more people than anyone else,” noted Affion Williams, who used to be chairman of the college’s Labor membership on life.

Mr Williams recalled “a lot of fun and banter” between Labor and plaid Cymru supporters in the hall.

He needed to relive his first moment of learning the law.

Recently he said that only after testing an untested drug would he be able to “look to the future once again with a sense of optimism”.

Mr Gething was elected President of the Scholars’ Association at Aberystwyth and President of the National Union of Scholars Wales.

Before turning to politics, he went straight to work as a lawyer.

He was first elected to the National Assembly for Wales, as it was then called, in 2011 to form Cardiff South and Penarth, on the same terms as his party colleague Ken Scates.

Recalling their first meeting, Mr. Scates noted: “I realized that he had a strong desire to do something…to serve.”

Mr Gething made the biggest impact as Welsh health minister as the Covid pandemic brought immense attention to the Welsh Government and raised his profile as a political candidate.

Mr Scates noted, “No other politician has stepped up like Mark (Drakeford) and Vaughan.”

“I was amazed by his ability to endure criticism, hits, unfair personal attacks and remain focused on protecting lives and livelihoods.”

Donation scam and minister sacked

However Ms Blythyn denied she was the source of the print and Crowd.Cymru said she was not the source of the guidelines.

Mr Gething subsequently noted that the leak “could only be from one member’s phone”.

He publicly denied presenting evidence to support his claim, although he said he would “not read this account publicly”.

Mr Gething was most successful in the Welsh Labor management match in March

Possibly in May, plaid Cymru scrapped its co-operation motion with Labor in the Senedd, with plaid chief Raun ap Iorwerth saying he was “deeply concerned” about donations accepted by Mr Gething during his leadership campaign.

In June, Mr Gething lost a vote of no confidence in the Senedd – when two Labor members were in poor health – although he insisted he would not concede defeat.

On Tuesday, four members of the Welsh Government Cabinet resigned in one lifetime, and Mr Gething was asked to step down.

He replied that he was ill.

“It’s been the honor of my life to do this job, even for a few months,” he said.

“I will now discuss the timetable for the election of the new leader of our party.”
